That's that, then.

He might just hang on as a backbencher, but there's no way he's got any kind of chance of being on the front bench now.

Shame really. Quite rare for a politician to be so honest.

He's Scottish, and an MP - I fail to see why there's a problem?

But I guess he had to come out in advance of this Sunday's News of the World.

They may take this two ways by the media/papers:
A) Drunken fool not fit go goven or
B) This highlights the problem of drink and will be an inspiration to all heavy drinkers.

I recon A - But this has been talked about for months so it is hardly shocking is it?

He used to turn up at my old univesity union for old boys nights and get a bit sloshed. I reckon hes been forced out by the papers, but forcing a leadership election is a good play cos who will stand against him? Plus the lib dems are totally split down the middle these days with the "orange book" pro market pseudo tories and the sandal wearing lentil munching hardcore oldies. Charlie is probably the only way they can keep going, half of the party will split away if anyone else takes over.

When I was on Charles campaign team back in 1999 before finally joining a creditable political party Charles drinking problems were well known.

The problem with the Liberal Democrats is that they are a part for the most part of disaffected Tories and people who only want to acheive the social status that being a Councillor brings.

They have few principles other than getting elected and when they do in a Local Governmnet setting ie Norwich they do not have ability to run anything.

Had his hand forced probably but hope he carries on with his "improvement".

Just goes to show that the Lid-Dems even drive their Leader to drink!!
