Hi all,

As the Travel for London web site seems to have failed me can anyone who knows London tell me the best way to get from Waterloo to Moorgate avoiding the Tube?

Gotta be there for a meeting on Monday and as there is going to be a Tube strike on I need to find alternatives but I don’t really want to pay for a cab.

All I can get from the TFL site is a rout using the tubes, which is not much help.

Help!

Matt

Doesn't multimap do walking directions? And I don't mean "put one foot in front of the other, swing the opposing arm"

Could very well be wrong so apologies in advance

Erm I'd suggest walking.
If the strike is full on then the buses will be chocker. If its not raining its not that far a walk.

Also the Waterloo / Cuty line may not be on strike so if this is the case take this to Bank and walk from Bank.

Number 76 bus takes half an hour from waterloo to moorgate.

And I know that because if you go to the tfl site and click on "more options" under the journey planner / search button you can deselect the tube as a travel option

yeah, walk it! just head towards southwark bridge along the south bank, then straight up via bank to moorgate. reckon it can be done in about 35 minutes or so and there's a branch of 'eat' by the oxo tower where you can get a coffee if you get too parched...

Walk. Along the South Bank, across Southwark Bridage, up to Bank and then up Moorgate as someone else said. I reckon you can do it in under 30 minutes.

Cheers for that!! I have no concept of where anything is in London usually do my best to avoid going up to the smoke. 35mins does not seem that far, I will take a look at a map and see if I can work out a route.

That’ll teach me to sit swearing at the web site instead of looking for obvious solutions!! Whoops!

I also need help......

Will have just moved to Balham and need to get to Canary Wharf and Canada Sq, unfortunately I only know of the tube from Balham to Bank and the DLR to Canary Wharf.

Can anyone help as its my first day at my new job and it won't look good if I can't get in.

Cheers,

Si

Welcome to Balham! I'm just off the High Road towards Tooting....

...anyway, not sure about your complete route, but you can get a train direct to London Bridge from Balham - probably some onwards bus options from there....

If you can get the train to London Bridge, then wander down to the pier and take the boat along the Thames, do a bit of sight seeing Takes you to Canary Wharf pier which is 10 minutes from Canada Square. Had to take the ferry on the day of the bombings and it's alright, if (naturally) slower than the tube.

Cheers,

Im just behind the station (overline), if you have seea bright yellow punto zooming round, with a rather loud exhaust (not fitted by me, previous owner, honest) that would be mine...

it has a PH sticker in back window, not that the gf will keep it in there long and has probably tried to remove it.

Whats the night life like, or is it a case everyone goes to Clapham for that?

I'll just add the trains to London Bridge aren't THAT regular (about 35 mins direct, once every half-an-hour), so check the timetable before embarking on this route.

Anyway - Balham nightlife;

...well for late night boogy action there's not a whole lot apart from The Bedford Arms at the weekends after the comedy - it's quite busy though and a good laugh ina cheesy way.

Late night drinking:
Think The Exhibit is open until 1 at weekends these days.
The Duke Of Devnshire pub (on the High Road on the way to Claph South) has a 2am licence at the weekends and a 12 licence in the week (as long as you're in by 11pm).

There's a nice cheeky little bar/cafe that will let you in for a late night drink called Cafe Viva - it's right next to my building (Du Cane Court) on the High Road towards Tooting.

Email me through my profile if you want anything else - don't want to fill up this thread with Things To Do in Balham!

....and I'll take your bright yellow Punto, and raise you a lairy bright orange leather jacket!

Waterloo to Moorgate - could take the overland train from Waterloo East to London Bridge which would shorten the walk slightly. They're every 2 or 3 mins, still likely to be crowded if there's a tube strike on though (they were last time I tried that in a strike in 1996).
