I managed to pull the leg muscle in my hip last week and it's still hurting now. I can walk ok (limping) but running or any form of exercise causes it to hurt even worse. Should one just rest up to allow it to heal, or keep exercising it so it doesn't go tight? I normally go for a run 3-4 times a week but haven't done so since as it seemed to make it worse. My biggest worry at the moment is I'm off skiing next week and really need to be fit by then!

Perhaps some gentle excercise like swimming might help. The pain is natures way of telling you to rest it.

I had ultrasound treatment on a pulled muscle (in my neck!!!) and it was great, the pain and inflamation was reduced significantly. Try and get to a physio they should be able to sort it.

I pulled an adductor once, squatting, it made a popping sound as I went down. My leg swelled up to twice the size.
I had that ultrasound thingy and it healed fairly quicky, and I was squatting again in no time.

Oh, how true that is.

That I didn't want to hear! I've booked an appointment with the doc for Tuesday morning to see if there's anything I can take to help.

Try an ice-pack (frozen peas!) for 15 mins every couple of hours for a few days, and take warm showers after exercise, rather than hot baths. That should help reduce the inflammation.

I hear that Vixpy pulls his muscle on a regular basis, maybe you should ask him?...

The standard treatment 72 hours post trauma is heat rather than ice. So get yourself a wheat bag and apply it 2-3 times per day for about 25minutes each time.

Trouble with hip flexors/extensors is you tend to need to use them all the time (unless your flat on your back) so it may take longer for them to heal.

Also maybe try taking Ibuprofen tabs (NSAIDS) they may help to reduce the inflammation a little.

If you want any chance of having a good skiing trip I'd suggest you rest totally from now on.

Go see (an pay for) a specialist sports injury physio for best results though.

I have to say (and no disrespect to any GP's) I wouldn't bother seeing your GP other than to secure you a BUPA referral if you've got cover - I would go straight to a physio. You're GP will tell you to rest and to take painkillers, this is unlikely to help you recover for your ski-ing trip.

I defer to your obviously superior knowledge.
