) Still the photos of us all gimped up are quite funny. I'm stopping now as I'm obviously digging myself a big hole here
Dave
Is this the wrong time to mention that I'm sat here with my central heating on?

Hey Ben, I met Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes a few weeks ago - he gave a talk at Surrey Uni (my wife works there so she was able to get me a ticket). Unfortunately the hi-tech slide projector broke down after about one quarter of the way through, but the images up until then were amazing.
The trans-antarctic mission part of the longtitudinal circumnavigation is simply incredible. I don't know how they didn't die.
That man is completely mad, but a top bloke and utterly committed. A true inspiration to everyone. I know he has a mixture of those who love him and those who hate him - which camp do you fall into? Has he supported you in any way (morally/psychologically/financially)?

Ran Fiennes is great. I wrote to him (care of his publishers) when I was 18, not really expecting to get an answer - I'd literally written to 'Sir Ranulph Fiennes, C/O Random House...'
To my utter amazement, a three-page handwritten reply arrived a couple of weeks later - I was for asking for advice on what, looking back, was a hare-brained plan, but he took me quite seriously and was extremely generous with his time and advice. I get a shed-load of email from young people planning their own adventures nowadays, and I always think of Ran's generosity when I reply.
You're right, though - he's completely bonkers.

I could never do anything like that in my life.
