Any of you clever folk know where I can get hold of one of these? Much googling, yahooing and e-baying only shows up an expensive mains-gas only unit and some e-bayers who want one.

Thank you kindly.

And pray tell - what is an LPG gas poker?

Edited cos I don't know the difference between carnivore fodder and religous fools!

A gas poker that runs on LPG, of course. Presumably it needs different shaped holes or something.

(a gas poker is a device for lighting your fire - one end goes in a bayonet-type gas socket in the wall. A tube runs from the wall socket to an iron poker with holes in it for the gas flames that you stick between the coals)

I only found out about these recently, puggit. It seems a much easier way than the newspaper and wood route, or even the gas blowtorch we currently use. (Well, would use, if we could undo it from the empty bottle of gas it's attached to)

try yell.co.uk and search on fireplace shops or the like, they will stock them but probably not in the internet as such.

Might have to visit a shop. Actually there is a shop in my village (a fireplace type shop) that would probably do them but thats north hampshire so not sure where you are.

I light my fire with matches - no firelighters or anything like that. Just plenty of dry kindling, a bit of newspaper, and very dry wood. Its all in the technique.

I bet a "standard" one might come with an optional jet for LPG. Gas ovens & hobs usually do...

Trevor... an alternative method for you (and one that we use at the workshop)...

Get a Weedburner (no.. not a bong!) and is a weed burning lance, most garden centres will sell them I would have thought... We use one for lighting our blow heaters at the workshop, piezo ignition and a butane bottle... job done!

I use a creme-brulee stylee blow torch - uses standard lighter gas which as we all know is still dirt cheap!

Thank you, gents. There's a couple of ideas for me to look into.
BTW, this is a knackered solid-fuel Rayburn we have to light every few days, and the stove nuts (correct term?)are a pig to light.

Balls of newspaper in the middle, sort of wigwam thing made of dry sticks over the top, some slightly larger sticks over that, and Bronowski's eggs on top.

You don't need a gas poker, just a super soaker and some screenwash fluid;

Those kiddies are the business! I use one for fire lighting regualarly. I have also fixed my Dyson with one, and recently removed the rear calipers from the Cerbera with the aid of one.

Never made a creme brulee though...
