Does anyone have any ideas how that works, exactly, if it can store heat until needed yet it doesnt take batteries but does have a switch, and solidifies when its hot (rather than when its cold).

Got something similar.

It's a gel in a plastic pack. You boil the pack for 5 mins. It cools and solidifies and then you "activate" it by pressing a metal disc, this reacts with the gel and it heats up. Lasts about 1-2 hours and then you need to re-boil and cool.

Make your own

the switch is actually a peice of metal and when you deform it the energy released heats up the surrounding material as it has a very low boiling point.

He's probably ok. And had his own idea of deforming the switch.
