Im sure its been done before, but if you put the worlds best genetic engineers and maternity nurses together (no sniggering at the back) would it be possible to create a living dinosaur which 'works' ie runs about with its mates, makes scary noises and conducts itself in a traditional dinosaurous manner?

Why not? Surely anything is possible - I mean we already grow human ears on the backs of mice, and all that. How about a quasi-dinosaur. Interbread with an aligator, or along those lines?

Best bet is to take a chicken and de-evolve it by deleting/switching off the more modern genes until it starts look like something a bit more prehistoric.

How do you know that's what they did? Been travelling back in time again?

Dont believe everything Mr. Spielberg tells you, his craft is deception.

So its not possible. Why not?

Are we not supposed to believe the stories in the sun, about escaped mutant reptile kangaroo creatures, from underground labs, as engineered by the govt either?

Im no expert, just assumed with cloning and genetic engineering, anything was possible, given time and application etc

DNA is not sufficiently stable over geological timescales for anything useful to be salvaged from what remains today. It might eventually be possible to attempt to build something like a dinosaur from scratch, but we're a very, very long way off that at present.

By the way, I work for the MoD in research (indirectly these days) and I'd like to set the record straight - none of our mutant soldier kangaroos have ever escaped from their underground tunnels

I would imagine that the many, many genetic mutations and deletions over millions of years means that there is not sufficient genetic material on which to construct dinosaur DNA. Gene therapy mainly involves deletion or destruction of unwanted genes, and replacement of sections of chromosomes to get some desired effect. That's fine if you have the genes to splice in, for example if you want purple tomatoes that taste of peanuts, but finding genetic fragments unchanged since dinosaur days is not going to be easy. I suppose it could be possible to start with the basic genetic code of a large bird and splice in reptile skin instead of feathers, teeth, a penchant for meat, and an anti-social attitude, but it would be a bit of a mish-mash!
