I'm looking to buy a decent DVD Recorder compatible with the forthcoming change to digital TV but specifically for recording stuff off my video camera. In that respect, the Sony stuff looks like it's best and the one I'm looking at is the ******710 ** model which has a 160Gb hard disk too. The thing is that it comes with Freeview installed and I already have Sky. Are the two compatible and does anyone have any experience of these or alternative recommendations.

The Panasonic ones are pretty good. I've got the base model (DMR-ES10 I think) and i can highly recommend it. Pretty much all the reviews I've seen rate the Panasonic ones very highly. I use mine to archive programs of my Sky+ (hence i didn't need the hard drive) and it does the job perfectly.

We've got the slightly older Sony RDR GXD 500 model (with Freeview but no harddisk). Happy with the quality and ease of use etc but it is very slow to start-up, load and unload etc. It's also got quite a noisy fan so if you leave it on but aren't actually playing anything you can hear it in the room. We did get it at a good price but if I had my time again, I'd buy something with the hard-disk because it gets a pain not having enough space on the DVD that's in the machine when you're trying to record something! Unless you record everything in LP or EP (quality still fine) you'll only get an hour or so on each DVD. I don't know if the slowness is normal in DVD recorders (ie it has to index write etc).

Is there a DVD recorder which can directly access the Sky+ menu so that it can be set to record future programmes in exactly the same way as the Sky+ box uses it's own HDD? Or do I have to watch the programme I'm recording?

I have the one down from the 710, the 510. Bloody excellent, can't recommend it enough. Slim design, looks good, excellent quality and very easy/intuitive to use. £300 on the internet. The 710 just has a bigger HD and DV.

Simpo says: Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

The JVC suggested is not suitable for your requirement, for starters it is not future proof for DVB, so a lack of freeview cancels it right out.

The only two (or 3) available at the mo are

The Panasonic DMR EH60D
The Sony RDR-HXD710
The Sony RDR-HXD910

As I stated in my previous posts the Panny is a bit on the slow side loading DVDs.

The Sony looks like the better option and the difference between the above models is the size of the hard drive.

For more details read the reviews in this website , select the make and model and read about it.

based on der's comments on this thread I went for Panasonic DMR-EH50, read/writes in multi format (all formats I think), had plenty of disk space for my needs, optical output for my AV amp, and a rather handy SD card slot on the front.

it's dead easy to use, great sound and picture quality. I just wish I wasn't so impatient on Friday when I simply HAD TO BUY IT THEN, and instead I should have got it from der at a much reduced price. Ho Hum

Well I read the reviews and Sony it was but it cost me dear as once I learnt the 910 had the HD output thingymajig, I had to have that one instead of the 710 but I did get it for £580 on the internet which is a sizable chunk of saving.

Another vote for the Sony HXD910 with 250GB hard disk. I've been uploading tapes straight from camera (hi-def images downsampled to standard definition PAL). An hour's video takes 7GB on disk at highest quality, so there's room for a few tapes on the disk

The moaning reported earlier was about Sony DVD players, not recorders. And if there was real merit to the complaints, there would be a class action suit

Edited to add - the Sony 910 upscales to 720p resolution through HDMI interface, useful for flat screen tellies

On one of the sites I visited, someone reviewed the Sony 210 and came up with a similarly scathing review so maybe that one should be avoided.
