Came home last night, after picking the girlfriend's car up from a mate's house who's party we had attended the day before.

As I was walking up to the front door I happened to notice a couple of lads generally being abusive and rude, going from house to house yelling (there's no way in hell you could call it singing) carols at the poor occupants, then being abusive when they either weren't given anything or not what they had expected.

A few minutes later and the doorbell rings. I answer the door at which point the one not holding a box of chips starts up on Jingle bells. Before he's had a chance to finish the first line, I cut him short with "Very nice" and slammed the door shut.

After thinking about it for a bit I'm now worried by the prospects of revenge attack brick through the window. The area we live in is by no means the worst, but it has it's fair share of scrotilla. Our front door and window are hard on the edge of the footpath, easily within striking distance, should the urge take someone.

Could I have reacted better?

Yes, slammed the door without the compliment/and or used a supersoaker after you nicked his chips.

Best thing to do would have been to just ignore them and not answer the door.

With any luck they're just loud mouthed gobss who haven't got enough balls to come back for a revenge attack. Sounds like they were just after a quick buck to feed their White Lightning habit and Burberry addicton.

i had the same last night, with two chavvy fellows, attempting to sing "Once in Royal David's City", after the first line i told them to "Go away", and shut the door. At which point one shouted, "If i see ya in town i'll beat ya!". Quite.

That would have been the best policy

That would have technically made me a prisoner in my own home though, not really my style.

Really should have nicked his chips though - opportunity lost, dammit.

They're always knocking at my door, sing one line and then put their hand out, cheeky bastards after a quick buck. so what I do now is, make them actually sing at least two songs in full, if they can, I give them 50p if they can't tell them to come back when they can actually recite the carols in full!!

Should it happen again, quickly flick his chips into his face and slosh a mug of boiling mulled wine on his crotch. Then release the hounds.

The hounds with bees in their mouth.

Or an ingenous Home Alone-esque contraption of booby traps leading up to your front door.

Or just line the path with rakes.

ask if they do requests - if they answer yes, ask em to p!ss off

at least it's only christmas carols - haloween round our way was horrific (literally) with 20 year old chavs out causing hell, unfortunately their shared brain cell always appears to be left home to look after baby chasney

still, at least after this year we only need minor repairs - bonnet, spoiler, bumper, and roof panned in on the wifes car, my car and one other in the road...

I dunno how anyone can say this country has progressed. Only a few years back if someone had done that to your car you'd have been able to give them a smack and that would have been the end of it. Now you simply have to put up with it and woe betide you if you dare defend your property.

Heat up a pound coin on the gas in a pair of tongs, throw it out to them and slam the door.

I liked the approach mentioned on Wogan this a.m. Yes I am a TOGG!
cue how old is old thread....

Anyway you say do you know anymore?
Away in a Manger. and if they make a start you join in and sing a couple of verses as loud and embarrassingly as possible.

Know any more, How about Good King Wenceslas?
repeat community sing song.

Either then they get the hint that you are winding them up and beggar orf, or they stik it out, you give em 20p and they tell all their mates, "Don' go tha' 'ouse, e's an effin' nutter, innit."
