Rugby punch ups
Discussion
Hi All,
anyone know any good links to footage of rugby punch ups?
A Finnish mate of mine sent me this:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=530669738883
of an Ice Hockey match, but I'm sure Rugby can do better than that...
the England Samoa game would be a great start.
Cheers

The England Samoa game was nothing much. No likns I'm afraid, but if you can find footage of the Lions tour of Australia in 1989 (I think it was) when Nick Farr-Jones and Robert Jones both played scrum-half... They were at each other every scrum, and everyone else regularly joined in. Now they were proper punch-ups

No he is right that was just a bit of handbags really, there are some classics, the 99 call springs to mind.
I do have a link to a big old punch up in the french league recently, I'll see if I can find it.

No link I'm afraid mate, but I'd just like to say that my knuckles on my left hand are sore as hell.
8 weeks into the comeback, my first scrap
And he got binned as well
In terms of player vs crowd participation, this one is good:

So this is all good clean fun and entertainment when it happens on a rugby pitch but, if a single punch or shove is thrown on a football pitch the whole anti football lobby is calling for the players to be sacked and the game to be banned?
The hypocrisy, or should I say snobbery, is quite staggering

The supposed hypocrisy comes from the onlooker, not from the players. As mentioned, a bit of physical intimidation is part and parcel of rugby, just the same as giving people a quick nip round the ankle with your studs in football is part of the game. What you DON'T get in rugby is players spitting at each other, rolling around in mock pain, snogging and prancing about a a big homosexual huddle after a score, and all that malarkey. Neither do you get a bunch of players screaming at the referee for every decision that goes against them, nor do you get knifings, beatings and huge running battles in the crowd, requiring 1000 police with horses and helicopters to prevent trouble. What you do get is a big beery party using a sporting event as an excuse, and a mixing of home and away fans who come to enjoy the game and each others' company, not to disembowel someone.
It's the twisted snobbery of football that reallyirritates.

The biggest difference between the two is that fact that in the vast majority of case in rugby it stays on the field and you have a pint afterwards. None of this brawling in the tunnel after the game or going for each other the next time you play etc.
Rugby is a physical game and sometimes things happen which a player will take exception to (see Cueto against Samoa). It happens. As far as I'm concerned if someone gives me a dig in the kidneys in a tackle then he'll get a dig back.
Football is going in the opposite direction where physical contact is becoming more and more frowned upon. It's played by ill educated, overpaid louts who are nothing more, in the majority of cases, than the chav legions who idolise them. My stepson plays at under 12 level and the amount of arguing, shouting at referees etc is astonishing.
Fortunately he's just told me that he wants to pack it in at the end of the season and take up a proper game instead
There are some utter thugs playing in the NHL though, when I was over there this time last year there was all the fall out (apart from the season being on the brink of collapsing during the 310 day lockout) from the Bertuzzi - Moore incident in March 2004 that left Moore with three broken vertebrae in his neck.
Bertuzzi was supended indefinately, fined over half a million USD, a year probation and 80hours community service...
It seems that you cant have a hockey match without a fight, I went to see a local minor league came and there were several fights that would of not looked out of place in the 10 best UK pub brawls ever...

The daft thing is that there seems to be a convenient image of football as the working man's game, and rugby is only played by middle/upper class snobs from privileged backgrounds. It's just such bollox! In my area, rugby is played by miners, firemen, carpet salesmen, window fitters and other "folk", and there's no toffs and Lord Snootys. Puffballers just like to believe they have some divine connection to the supposed working class - they probably do have, because only thickos can miss the irony of being asked to pay £40-50 to watch millionaire footballers take the piss out of them for 90 minutes a week.
Where are the real snobs?
Driving to and from training in Bently GTs, Hummers and stupid gansta crap, paying £300 for a haircut that looks like something you get down the High St for a fiver, and appearing on after shave adverts with their trophy wives - they're the elitist t
