So how much do we think it's worth? Who owns it? and what car is it on?

Well I'd say about £15-20K at a guess???

The RAC say it should be on a 2002 Audi A4 Diesal Avant, however I saw it some nondescript mini MPV type thingie.

So who owns it ?

Well considering it went tanking past me on the M1 on Friday night with blue lights, sirens, and flashing headlights all going ten to the dozen, I'd hazard a guess that it belongs to a public body and was bought with our taxes!!!! If not and yes it might be possible that some private cars have blue lights fitted and are entitled to use them, then I'd still guess that maybe that particular public servant might be paid a little too much if they happen to have the kind of spare floating around to be able to w4nker it on poncey plates!!!!

Oh and while we're at what about the NHS Paramedic "response car" Merc A class I saw with it's poncey S999 *** number plate? well even if the NHS didn't pay for it originally and it was given as a thank you by the supplying dealer (yea right...like when did a car dealer give anything away for nothing????) they've almost certainly paid to have it transfered onto a newer vehicle, but oh dear Mrs Breast Cancer sufferer you can't have those life saving drugs you require as you local NHS trust can't afford them cos we've spunked all our dough up the wall on silly numberplates for our ambulances.

Ah, now, I have read about this, may even have been on PH. It is the Police, or a branch of them. IIRC it was on an unmarked car, a BMW for a while, it was seen on the TV news at some terrorist incident or other too, vague memory.

The NHS is underfunded as it is ..

and Mel is correct

Perhaps the plate came off a recovered stolen vehicle, or the proceeds of crime...

Possibly, but if that is the case why not flog it on ebay along with all the other stolen recovered and proceeds of crime goods, or would it be ok for "PC Plod to walk da streets covered in bling just cos e took it of da bad guy!!!!" come on get real the plate is worth a few bob and like it or not that is tax payers money that could be put to better use (it would probably pay for a whole "safety camera" or even a coppers wages for a year) and for god sake it looks like it's being used on an unmarked car!!!! I thought the idea was for those to be subtle and blend in??? yea right with a plate that noticably you might as well have put battenburg right down the side!!!

Infact thinking about it further that is plainly rediculous, I'd guess that the registration number of a stolen vehicle is just about the only 100% sure part that could be returned to the rightfull owner!

doh....or was that sarcasm?

i personally think that it *is* quite likely that mercedes or their dealer would have paid for that number it will have cost very little anyway <£500.

Some of the cars that the ambulance service, doctors and some special forces use are owned by the driver so it would be there own private plate.

That's not the point when you walk out of a hospital having been told that a certain drug that is needed to treat MRSA (which has been caused by hospital poor practise in the first place) and is required as soon as possible as the infection is multiplying isn't avaliable for several days due to cost!!! £500 or not is not the point when you are dealing with people who are sick and relatives whose emotions are running high at the time.

I would be amazed if that was the case. When I worked on an EOD team in the early 90's we were all "on call" 24/7 and as such we had blue magnetic blinky pots in our own cars and radio pagers, due to very strict insurance implications we were always told that they were only to be used in true emergencys and that we would be doing so at our own risk. By the mid 90's when "crown imunity" was removed we lost these and were told that if we were in our own cars we would have to wait for a marked police escort to arrive.

I will admit that they did used to be good fun and the quickest route from Cambridge to Heathrow is through central london 4 up in a 205GTi with 4 police motorcycle out riders. But our man TV4 i'd wager a packet of hob nobs was is a "crown" car.

Oh yes they were also good fun to pull your mates over with when they came out the pub which is probably the real reason we had them taken away

As far as the paramedics car is concerned, it will probably be his own personal vehicle, there are several paramedics knocking around Derby, I know that the guy with the silver Rav 4 its his own car, so if he wants his own plate on it, fair enough, none of our business. As for the unmarked car, if it is some department of special branch, or Spooks, or Ross Kemp and his mates, again it makes sense, it makes an unmarked car even more stealthy.

How is a distinctive private plate more stealthy than a normal registration?

Surely "stealthy" would be changing their registrations every few months for another normal looking reg plate?

Because, the things that usually give away un unmarked car are things like a normal plate, two bib sitting in it, a few ariels, lights behind the grille and in the door mirrors, etc etc etc. But the stealthy cars are things like green Subaru Imprezas with gold wheels and gold stripes, Skoda Octavia vRS's and the like, coupled with a private plate, you would notice the cars for sure, but dismiss them as NOT being Police, mainly due to having a private plate, or even if you did recognise them as bib, you might think they were the sort of bib that dont do you for motoring stuff, being on another mission as it were. Like unmarked local plod in a plain coloured Astra on a motorway.

I saw the first cherished plate I've ever seen and liked the other day. It was on a new - but rather grimy - Bentley 4-door:

Made me smile, anyhow...

Not the case on the one I saw it was fully striped, battenburged, stickered, full light bar the works, no way was it a personal car.

????? Really don't get this arguement as it makes any car more memorable, that is if I saw the same car again I'd know it whereas it was actually on a boring mini MPV thing infact the car itself was so boring I didn't even register what it was apart from dull and silver. But the number plate TV4 made is stand out and that is exactly what is not wanted.

Maybe it's not worth their while selling it. It's porably cheaper to just stick a spare set of lights and stickers on it than fart around getting the plate transfered off and then an original plate put back on, then prep it for sale, then organise an auction as you can't just bung it on autotrader, then it's bound to sell for nowhere near the market value. How many man hours would that take?
So it probably works out far cheper to keep it than to do all that and then have to buy a new squad car.

tv4 costing less than £500 - are you nuts?

my plate is worth £5k (apparently) and is 4 numbers and 2 letters.

2 letters and 1 number is easily in the £20k+ region.

The silver Rav 4 in Derby is also fully liveried, as are the others, including a Smart car. They are both owner/drivers.
