Bought one on eBay to use as a hard-drive based recorder for my bullet cam on trackdays. Worked a treat! However it was an absolute sod at playing anything that wasn't recorded directly using the device itself.
I tried about 5 different applications at ripping my DVDs to XViD and or DiVX. They would all play fine on the PC, but on the Archos would suffer huge lip sync issues. Same with nearly all downloaded / ripped content. Gave up in the end and sold it back on eBay for more than I paid for it, so all worked out in the end
(and I still got my track footage from Folembray). Will probably by the smaller 500 for track day use, but seeing as I won't be doing any days for 4-5 months figured I'd sell and wait for the prices to drop a bit before I pick another one up.
