Christmas is just round the corner, at which there will be much merriment in my household. However, this year my aim is not to put on (more) weight!

As such, which beverages have the least calories / alcahol ratio (if you follow my logic)?

I reckon a vodka and slimline tonic has got to be pretty good.

I think you are best off going for drinks with a high alcohol content, like wine or spirits mixed with something.

After all a double shot of whiskey will have the same effect as a pint.

vodka is always called the slimmer's drink cos it has a very low calorific value.
but i think your food intake is more likely to far outweigh your drink intake in terms of calories, especially so at christmas.

Food is always the stomach-bloater at Christmas, and to be honest, unless you're a miserable old self-punishing sod, you'll eat and be merry, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Alcohol - well usually it falls down to a choice of beer or wine. Choose wine - it's the volume that makes you fat, remember, and while you might polish off a bottle or two of a night, if you were on the beer you might be on your sixth or seventh pint by the end of the night - volume-wise, probably over twice that of the wine.

Having said that about food though, I don't actually like most Christmas food - turkey is like a bland, dry version of chicken, Christmas Cake is the culinary equivalent of a Rolls-Royce, ie luxury overkill, too big to go in the garage, and Christmas Pudding? Sorry - am I eating a cannonball?

In our house, we all feel like this, so we just have something really nice that we all like. We're having venison this year, incidentally.

Nice

I've always wanted to have a goose for christmas day, my dad is not so keen though.

I personally think home made christmas cake is divine, the shop bought ones can be overly rich.

Completely wrong - it's got nothing to do with the volume but the calorific content of the drink.

By your reckoning a pint of water is more fattening than a shot of Sambuca.

calorific value is the amount of heat released during the combustion of a fuel or food.

therefore it stands to reason that the higher the alcohol content, the higher the calories, there's no way you can have high-alcohol and low calorie

whether this makes you fat, i dunno

When we were on the Slimming World diet, the lowest scoring drinks were Gin/Vodka slimline - each one being worth 1/4 of a pint!

Does that mean we can give drinks a RON rating instead of a calorie one ?

Been recommended to me as a 'diet' alcoholic drink as well, although not drinking is the only real way to avoid putting on weight (how boring would that be over Christmas though???).

Vodka, slimline tonic and squeeze 1/4 of a fresh lime on top and you actually have a very nice, refreshing drink (my summer BBQ favourite).
