OK, plotting an MP3 player, but there is a 'function' that I'd want. Only problem is I don't know if there are actually any players with this funtion out there! On the other hand, they may all do this as standard.

Is there an MP3 player that lets you categorise tracks then play random selections from a category, or ideally two? So you could ask for a random play of rock+driving tracks, or classical+evening, or jazz+evening etc.

Does such a thing exist?

The iPod allows you to select based on genre so you could have a random selection of classical for example. But only one genre at a time.
Through iTunes you can set up smart playlists for multiple generes and listen to these playlists through the iPod, but they have to be set up in iTunes (so if you set up rock+driving and driving+classical but want rock+classical then you can't do it)
These are based on the mp3 genre tag, so you'll need to be sure all your songs have the right genre.

Don't know what the other players do though.

ITunes smart playlists will perform this function. They are easy enough to use and automatically add new tracks to the playlists as you import the new music.
