What happened to Tazers? And I thought firing a gun in a plane, highly trained officers or not, could cause a decompression emergency.
They use low velocity rounds that won't (shouldn't) penetrate the fuselage... IF the fool was running up and down saying i have a bomb then I'm not surprised he sufferd a 9mm brain haemorrhage.

If somebody is running up and down the aisle of an airliner, shouting bomb, then I have no sympathy for him or her.
BBC says woman was running after him shouting that he was mentally ill ??
I guess that, in situations like that, where a split second decision can mean life or death, the guy who took the shot(s) could have thought she could have possibly have been an accomplice, maybe?
Do nothing and maybe the airplane is blown up and all the passengers killed. You're choosing between one dead nutter and 300 dead innocent civilians. Which would you choose?
One problem is that naive lefties - and a lot of our hard-of-thinking media-befuddled population think that everyone is as nice as they are, and can be reasoned with before they press the button.

News is coming in, Eric, of the first passengers shot dead by an airline marshall on an American plane while the plane was in flight
Don`t know where you got that info from LA, but BBC reports that the plane had landed and the suspect was shot while running up the linkspan.

News is coming in, Eric, of the first passengers shot dead by an airline marshall on an American plane while the plane was in flight. Facts trickling out: seems the US citizen (44) was acting aggressively, running up and down the ailse, said he had a bomb (that has still to be verified) and put his hand inside his holdall against the warning of the marshall. The American Airlines plane is back on the runway and surrounded by every man and his dog, all sporting machine guns. Sounds like someone mentally ill, or smashed on dope, rather than Bin Laden's pals. Department of Homeland Security - same one who did such a great job after the hurricanes struck, are on the case. Death by "Don't put your hand in that holdall, sir!" Or once known as, "Don't enter that subway carriage, sir!" I guess this is exactly what we all fear will happen when paranioa among the population is a government policy. I'll leave it to others to add to the post.

LA Please! An armed cop tells you to freeze and you reach inside your jacket....any cop in the world is justified at that time. What should he have done, waited until he pulled his hand out of his coat with a gun or grenade in it???? You go yelling "Bomb" and then make threatening gestures, guess what?

That how I was trained in using firearms, but in the states they have much more relaxed laws and procedures.

Appropriate action'
A spokesman for the homeland security department said the passenger indicated during the flight that there was a bomb in a carry-on bag and upon landing immediately exited the aircraft through the walkway between the plane and the airport terminal.
So, person indicates he may have a bomb in handheld luggage during the flight. Plane carries on (or possibly is diverted?), lands in Miami, where they connect the plane up to a terminal full of a lot more people, and let him off the plane. Could they not perhaps have found somewhere a few less people than an international airport?

Just for my information...
when exactly was the last time, on an American airliner (and therefore with Air Marshall) someone said,
"I've got a bomb on board", and really had a bomb?
If they have confidence in their security procedures it shouldnt be an issue. In having an armed man on an aircraft its almost admitting there is a problem with their security!

"Why, Officer Smith, did you not fire on the suspect who claimed he had a bomb, then reached in his coat after being told to freeze?" Well, your Honor, everytime before, there never was a bomb, how was I to know this time there was?"
Unfortunately, if this was the case, such a conversation could never take place.

Admitted best airline security in the world is Israel...they ALL have armed security on board.
Well many years ago US security was notoriously lax, and hence the need for air marshalls. I have to add, that it is not a job I'd like to do, and I do like flying safely, so if they make the skies safe then fair enough. But a lot of this is not adding up, to me at least. If someone was claiming to have a bomb on board during a flight in the UK, you'd be diverted probably to Stansted, and left in the middle of a field with a lot of people looking at you through sniper scopes.
