Is the law to do with lockknives or flickknives?
Can't see that a lockknife is any different to a "normal" knife, except safer because you can put the cutting edge away
The difference is that you can conceal the blade, so something that you can easily conceal in your pocket becomes the equivelant of a 12" kitchen knife. I don't think it is the fact that the blade can be locked that is the problem, rather than it it can be unlocked!
I have done a little 'research' and found that any blade that locks is now illegal, so i was wrong about the whole locking thing.
Maybe someone should tell maplins...or maybe i should injure myself with it and sue them!
Interestingly you can get away with carrying some 'weapons' if they are carried for your work, or for RELIGIOUS reasons!!
I think I am going to have to start my own religion one of these days.

You can buy them but to have them in a public place without reasonable excuse is an offence.
Such as a carpet fitter in a public place such as walking to his van to get some carpet whislt on a job would not be guilty.
Same man walking to the pub for lunch with this on him will be guilty even if he is walking from the job to the pub.
Otherwise every fisherman and carpet fitter would have been nicked.
All about reasonable excuse or lawful authority.
edited to add: certain knives become prohibited weapons such as gravity knives or flick knives and are illegal to have in a public place regardless.

Flick knives - knives where the blade is hidden inside the handle and shoots out when a button is pressed, also called switchblades or automatic knives, are illegal.
Butterfly knives - knives where the blade is hidden inside a handle that splits in two around it, like wings and the handles swings around the blade to open or close it, are illegal.
Knives, where the blade folds into the handle, like a Swiss Army knife, aren't illegal as long as the blade is shorter than three inches (7.62 cm). Looks like the one posted is therefore legal.
The knife itself isnt illegal its the reason for having it in a public place which determines wether it is illegal posession or not.
Difference between Prohibited weapon and posession of a bladed article is that of the reasonable excuse.
Bladed article is fine if there is reasonable excuse or lawfull authority.
Prohibited weapon is illegal in a public place regardless, there is a list of knives which are prohibited weapons.

But if the blade is shorter than 3 inches and locks it becomes a bladed article for the purpose of the act and reasonable excuse is then required. The one posted would be illegal if he did not have the reasonable excuse!

..indeed, I was posting under the assumption that hedders wasnt going to go on a stabbing rampage killing all and sundry therefore what he was enquiring about was the legality of the size and type of knife that the shop had sold him..
AFAIK there is no lawful excuse for owning, possessing, or having in a public place (regardless of circumstances) an automatic knife, balisong knife or a butterfly knife..might have to have a leaf through the provention of crime act '53, and the CJA act '88, as i think they have some provisions with regards to knives...
Therefore lawfull authority or reasonable excuse for carrying the knife is that they were carrying the article for use at work, carrying it for religious reasons or carrying it as part of national costume,- these excuses do not apply to knives which in their own right, have been deemed as illegal and offensive by the Prevention of Crime Act.
Thats right, i was clarifying from my point of view.
The knives you refer to would be prohibited weapons as part of offensive weapons legislation i believe.
I was assuming a mass murder spree was not on the cards either! But knives are not clear cut excuse the pun.
We are technically saying the same thing, that knife is not illegal if he needed it for work or other reassonable excuse such as part of a fishing set or national costume or religious reasons (provided he met the criteria for the one religious reason!). But it is illgal to carry around without the above.

You are quite right, I wouldn't do that , this would be a far more effective slashing weapon, stabbing someone with this would just annoy them.
