Evening guys,

After some advice/ideas for cheapish places to go for a bit of sun and relaxation in Jan/Feb.
We're considering the Canaries, Lanzarote etc. but are not sure how warm it's likely to be and what (if any) amenities will actually be open that time of year. Anyone been around that time who can offer some insight?

Else anyone have any other recomendations?

Cheers in advance...

canaries will be quiet(ish) but if ever want an assurance of decent weather, its where I head to for a week or 2 in winter.

I'm doing cyprus over new years, I am reliably informed it will be a pleasant 70'ish.

Not sure if that will change much in Jan/Feb.

Yep, Mauritius. That fits perfectly with the criteria of cheap winter sun doesn't it. Why not stay at Le Saint Geran as well....

I recently got back from The Gambia. Very hot (30+ degrees)there at all times of the year. Its pretty cheap to get to, and doesnt cost much when you're there. Only six hours straight down so no time changes and no jetlag either.

South Africa gets my vote. Stonkingly good value. Hire a car and visit B&Bs going along the Garden Route (Cape Town <> Port Elizabeth.)

Also, Mauritius - we got a great last minute deal for that.

And, New Zealand (best to take 3 weeks, though)

I got back from Sharm El Shaikh on monday. In the week I was there I didn't see a single cloud and the temperature was never below 30c, most days it was up at about 35-36. It is only a 5 hour flight away and the hotels seemed fairly quiet.

The canaries have more or less the same climate year round, though as another poster said it can be cool on winter evenings.

The nicer resorts are generally quiet, you mentioned sun rather thanb clubbing. The Playa Blanca resort on Lanzarote is excellent ( IMO best on the island ) nice sea front with a lighthouse to walk to, sheltered sandy beach etc.

Tenerife is also a very nice island, more to see that Lanzarote, espcially the Mt Teide volcano, absolutely spectacular, and in the North it's quite green with lots of interesting little towns. The most sunny resorts are in the SW of the island, around Los Gigantos.

Feuteventura, I would not recommend, it not called the windy island for nothing, great for windsurfers and nudists though.

We're going to Gran Canaria next week for the pre xmas sun, so I can report back on that when I reuturn, we're going to a smaller resort in the SW.

This website is very good for hotel bookings www.medhotels.com and if you're on a budget you will find that it's (often) much cheaper to fly to the Canaries with Iberia although this usually involves a change of flight, either in Barcelona or Madrid.

If you want to ask me any questions feel free to drop me a PM.

Austria was good and sunny when i last went this time of year.
Damn cold but right up in the mountains great amounts of sun and snow to cruise along and keep fit with.
far better than a dry roast on some beach somewhere.

although if thats what you want how about Goa, should be pretty hot there and some interesting things to see and do.

Thanks for your help guys - looking like it may well have to be Tenerife or Lanzarote.
Have seen some fantastic deals though for the Dominican and Goa. Have any of you been to these places and can offer some insight as to what their like?
