What can you tell from an ISP number?

I get visits to my web site like

194.154.190.252

nott-cache-5.server.ntli.net

swan-cache-6.server.ntli.net

host81-151-218-85.range81-151.btcentralplus.com and

webcacheB06a.cache.pol.co.uk

but they mean nowt to me. Can the numbers tell me who they are or anything about them? ( I think the last one is a police force!)

there are obvious things like that but its not always the case. they can easily route the traffic to different proxies if they have a problem in one area.

The ntli ones are NTL cache servers, and NTL have them in each of their regions, so those visitors are obviously from Nottingham/Swansea.

The last one isn't a police force, its a Freeeserve cache server

You can tell the persons ISP from the IP address and sometimes (NTL and Telewest mostly) their location.

These numbers/addresses generally give you an idea of who they are/what server they use. We have to check ip addresses for a forum that I belong to, we use either TraceRoute of the DNS one mentioned before, GeekTools is also a good one.

Trouble with a lot of these ip addresses is that they are a bit vague.

Given the ones in your list.....

Pipex, Nottingham NTL, Swansea NTL, BT (ones like this are usually broadband) and I think the last one is Freeserve.

Occasionally you do see some interesting ones like the BBC, SkyNews, MOD etc. The site I am admin for has even been known to have NASA, a USAFB and members of Parliament online!

If an address has 'ac' in it then it is generally someone from some university.

Also you can work out the country they are from, ie if it has 'fr' it's French.

I did once put the ISP of a visitor into a search engine and found another site the same ISP had been visting (it was a similar accessible visitor log). Let's just say I bet his boss didn't know he was using the company cumputer for that!
