...cos this is hurting my tiny little mind..

i read this the other day and can kind of see the logic but if i mention it to anyone else i get blank looks and no-one seems to believe it and i cant explain it very well one way or t'other...so who better to ask than your goodselves..

1. We know speed of light takes 8 or so mins to reach Earth
2. We know Earth is in the Suns orbit, gravitational pull malarkey
3. We know nothing is faster than speed of light

Quite simply if the sun theoretically vanished, the last rays of light that it made the nanosecond before would still take the 8 mins or so to get to us. - yeah i get that but..
Would the Earth stay in the orbit it was in ie would the suns gravitational pull still effect the Earth or would it shoot off on its own new orbit not being held by the gravity anymore?

See if you think it wouldnt stay in orbit of something thats not there, which i kind of get, then surely no matter how you argue it, whether its based on speed or reaction time or whatever, gravity is quicker than the speed of light? Which doesnt agree with old Einstein...

anyone?

Gravity propagates at the universal constant 'c' which is the for the purposes of your question means the loss of gravitational attraction would occur at the same time as the time taken for light to traverse the distance.

There is one thing that is faster than the speed of light, anyone?

therein lies the difference between the newtonian theory of gravity, and einsteins theory of general relativity

albert reckoned things weren't really attracted, space/time was bent, making straight lines appear curved for things in inertial motion.........../brain explodes

Bear in mind it's common when considering these conumdrums to be stuck in a fixed view of speed. We consider speed as miles per hour, metres per second etc., but once you accept that the 'hour' or 'second' or whatever it is you're measuring speed by isn't absolute, then thinks start to make sense. So, when an hour is 'different' from the perspective of different viewers, the concept of miles per hour (or whatever) becomes different too....

Jeez, 40 minutes through 5th Gear and I'm replying to relativity posts . Good tonight eh?

How can gravity be quick or slow? It's a force not a moving speed.

I know how to travel forward it time. You have to be able to travel faster than the speed of an electron though!!!! And still not the same kind of future travel we think of!

I don't watch it anymore, the tsunami thing on Beeb 1 is just about to get interesting though.

Some Exotic particles do travel faster than c now dont they?

And they've just cobbled together a gravity wave detector (using lasers) so mebe we'll confirm some theory sometime soon.

But as it stands now loss of the suns light and gravity should occure at about the same time, and then earth heads off in a tangental direction.

Wasnt that supposed to happen to the moon in 1999?

Putting aside the probelm of what you did with the Sun's mass - if you take it away, the Earth will continue in a straight line to nowheresville, and all the other planets will stay going in their last direction as there's no force to make them travel in a curve.

So, it would suddenly get totally dark and tempertures would head towards absolute zero (buoyed up a bit by the molten iron core). I expect the Moon's orbit would go a bit funny as well.

There was an Arthur Clarke story which ended: 'And then the Sun went out.'

Actually that is not true any more the speed of light has been superseded.
There have been experiments using partical excelerators where scientist have increased the speed of light by x1.5, I will have to find the link somewere.
