I think hot water frightens them.

Hot water on a plate surface will kill germs. Hot water on chicken will heat the muscle up but won't bring its internal temperature high enough to kill the germs.

Not sure that cold water kills germs on chicken, maybe it just cleans the chicken. Cooking should kill the germs however.

Whats the point in cleaning a Chicken, as soon as you let him go back into the yard it will get its self dirty again.

If you must clean your chickens try using look warm water.

Under no circumstances us really hot water when you are washing your cock........

I think it is..... Hot water helps the soap do it's job of cleaning (have you tried washing with cold water compared to hot?) and it's the soap that does the job of getting rid of germs/bacteria. Where as washing a piece of meat you want to eat with hot/warm water increases the temperature so that germs/bacteria breed faster.

DON'T wash uncooked chicken. If there are any bugs on them, you spread it about over the chicken instead of it being in one spot. The chances of some surviving after cooking are much higher.

Besides who washes their cock before bunging it in the oven! Sometimes you do before putting it in the dishwasher....................but only if she asks!

Taxi!

In reply to icamm
hhmmm...

So the fact that boiling water will sterilise stuff actually has no bearing on using less than boiling water for doing the dishes, as water has to boil to get rid of germs? That makes sense.

But it doesn't answer the question as to why we bother washing meat over with cold water and no 'germ remover' , what are we trying to remove if its not germs? My meat is not ussually covered in anything visible that i need to remove.

What he said Plus anything else you might not want to eat like feathers etc. Most meat now has all this done in the factory so it's probably less necessary than it used to be unless you are buying direct from the farm etc.

You are half-way there.

Basically a fresh chicken will have to stay cold in order not to breed germs. If the chicken is immersed in hot water then the overall temperature of the meat will go up enough to breed germs over a period of time, and the chicken starts rotting and smelling.
If you wash fresh chicken in cold water , the meat is preserved in a temperature that won't encourage germ breeding and be less of a health risk especially if kept refrigerated afterwards.

However you can still wash the chicken in warm water if you are cooking it straight away. The recommended cooking temperature will kill all germs in any case provided the recommended length of cooking time in relation to the weight of the chicken is adhered to,in order to avoid food poisoning.

water does not need to be at 100 degrees C to kill bacteria. if you were to use absolutely boiling water then you would kill bacteria very effectively but you would also lose a rather large amount of skin.

using very hot tap water is generally fine for helping washing up liquids deal with bacteria.

NB: as an aside: "boiling water" (ie stuff you put in your coffee) is not at 100 degress C. consider the fact that most western people are able to drink coffee when it cools down to about 65 degrees C. would you want to do the dishes in water that is much hotter than the hottest coffee you can drink? i know i wouldnt!
