Tory Leadership Hustings
Discussion
Has anyone been to one of these? I went to the Newport one last night - very very interesting. Apart from the fact that there was not one black or Asian face in the audience of 400, I was only one of a dozen or so people there under the age of 40.
The candidates came across very well, both with relatively similar outlooks and policies but with some stark differences.
David Cameron - exceptional performance, really convincing and has obviously taken on board the early issues with people feeling he's soft on policy! Wants a wholly inclusive Tory party that will accept the world and Britain has changed so that we can't 'go back' to the Thatcher era and have to look forward to a combined economy-building and social-care environment. Wants to develop better inclusive polices than Labour for single mothers, disabled and the poor whilst driving those with ambition to achieve everything they want to. Had some seriously sensible policies, although some that traditional Tories won't agree with, such as not making Cannabis class B again but increasing education in school on the subject from ex-addicts and supporting the voluntary sector in this field. Also exceptionally keen to build a solid cross-party climate change policy and bringing back a number of powers from Brussels.
David Davies - came across better than I thought he would, but occasionally lost his train of thought. Very much the old Tory guard who wants a return to 'Make Britain Great' Thatcherite policies; not sure this was the right way forward and seemed less inclusive than David Cameron. Quoted Churchill four times! Why do that when everyone know's we've got to move the party forward and not look at past glories?
Best bit was David Cameron's joke - if you're standing at a Welsh cliff top with a Labour MP, a Liberal MP and a Plaid Cymru MP, who do you push off first?
He said he thought initially the Labour MP, business before pleasure, but then realised it should be the Plaid MP, as your national duty should come first.
So - vote Cameron, to win back the people who still think the Tories are a load of fat landed gentry.
