How do you go about leaving Britain?
Discussion
I'm sure a lot of people would love to know how to do this. If you feel anything like me, you feel like your very blood is being drained by a punitive and wasteful government. You feel that social decay is rife. You want out.
The question is "How?" If you're like me, you've got a mortgage, cars and kids. You'll need to know where to go, and you'll need a job, somewhere to live, etc...
Comments, advice and information would be gratefully accepted.

2. Sell/pack everything you, don’t need/need (you can keep the wife and kids if you want but they are really a bit of a drag).
3. Purchase tickets to destination.
4. Find new job.
5. Purchase suitable accommodation in area of your liking and suitable automobile.
6. Enjoy!
No. 6 is something people often forget to do and end up feeling that perhaps what they did was a mistake. There is no formula to get it right first time, but often what you want becomes clear soon after. My first mistake was a massive one, I quickly realised that I didn’t come here to work/live in a city so I’m currently trying to re-locate to a rural area.
Any one can do it and often the hardest part is getting started, don’t get me wrong in that it’s a massive decision that may not initially go your way but anything that’s worth having is earned the hard way.
Good luck!
All I can tell you is that 75% of UK migrants go to the old commonwealth countries of Aus, NZ and Canada.
Canada currently offers some nice deals, like 0% income tax for the first 5 years your'e there as a resident non citizen. The qualification for residency rests on being able to afford a place to live or setting up a business. After 5 years you can decide whether or not to stay and go for full citizenship ( when you'll have to start paying tax like everyone else ).
My thoughts, and these are personal and in no way meant to offend, is that NZ can be somewhat isolated and provicial if you're from Europe/UK ( it's like Scotland has been chopped off the UK and stuck 4 hours away in the Atlantic ), Aus is more lively but still can get stale. Canada of course has it's drawbacks....it's cold in winter for a start....but very close to the US for cross border shopping trips, only a 'relatively' short & affordable flight from the UK ( compared to the other 2 ) and consistently scores among the top countries for overall quality of life.
For my part most likely plan is SE Asia next summer for 2 years, followed by 5 in Canada, then possibly depending upon what state Prime Minister Brown has gotten this country into...we'll be back in 2013.
At any rate we are due to leave UK Plc next summer as the existing management seem to be making a pigs ear of running the place.

It is very cheap to live off your savings but they don't last forever.

Canada
I like the sound of that.
Where abouts should I live?
How much is property?
Something with a view of a lake would be nice (and not too cold)
Toronto is nice, I like it there anyway and close to NY etc ( relatively ), alot of people rave about Vancouver ( it's a bit further away though ) and Quebec ( Montreal ) which is supposed to be lurvely....but is very francophone.
Property generally is about 1/2 to 1/3 UK prices, so a nice 4 bed detached house, big garden and garage in a suburb is about £120k.
Do a search on the web there are loads of companies that specialise in Canadian property. As I say the nice thing is that you can be a resident for 5 years without paying tax. Though you will need to meet certain criteria for that.
TBO..... flights are cheap to Toronto, it'a a lovely place, if you're in no great hurry wait till spring/summer next year and hop over for a look.

Plan is to get an internal transfer with work. Trick is to get an 'expat' package so I keep my lovely £ salary. Already doing the groundwork

Poor joke, but at least I got it in first
Mine was better![]()
"Keep running in any direction: you'll fall off eventually...."
It is a better gag, but it's speed over quality when cheap tee-ups like these are being handed out!
Fair enough

I don't think any Kiwi that is completely honest with themselves would disagree (or be offended at all). With the similar landmass to the UK and only 4M people, it is a bit on the empty side. Provincial is putting it midly in some areas...
Which leads me to my input, with this move you need to be aware of what you'd be giving up as much as what you'll be gaining. NZ is pretty quiet, even Auckland isn't really a hustle and bustle sort of place. However, the payoff is a good quality of life and access to a outdoor lifestyle few places in the world can match. I moved from NZ to the UK when I was 19, which was perfect as I was young enough to really enjoy the bright lights and big city stuff you just cannot find in NZ. Now I'm 32, I'm already planning my move back, as all I want to do in life is ski, windsurf and mountain bike. I will definitely be saying goodbye to large parts of my current life though. No more huge owner's club meets, no more going to F1, GP Bike, Rally of GB events, not even the slimmest hope of popping over to the 'Ring for a few laps with some mates...
You may be sick of where you are, but make sure you're ok with the good things you'll lose as a result of your relocation, that's what a lot people seem to forget to do.
