Our dog George, an 18 year old Cavalier King Charles spaniel had to be put to sleep today.
His back legs had gone a year ago but we purchased his own wheelchair to get around.
But his front legs went as well so it was time to say goodbye.

A very sad day for us and I am sure other pet owners know what its like

My condolences.

Know just how you feel, as my cat (adopted by my parents from me 9 years ago, when I moved to UK) was put down the other week after suffering from cancer for the past few years. Was a sad day for all.

Peter,

So so sorry to read your sad news.

As a cavvie-owner myself, I recall when you posted the 1st pic of George with his new 'wheels'. I showed it to Mrs. K, and we both shed a tear of happiness.

I'll share the news with her tonight, where I'm sure some tear shedding will take place.

Sincere condolences,

K [and Mrs. K too]

So sorry to hear that, our CKCS Ben had to be put to sleep in august. He was 13.5 which is pretty good for a cav but 18, flippin' heck! My inlaws cav died recently and he was 15.5 - the CKCS club is recording ages etc as part of a survey if you want to add to it. It's so hard deciding when enough is enough, you spend all you time keeping them fit, well and safe and then you have to decide the time to go off to the big kennel in the sky - one of the hardest things I have ever done. That is a great little wheeled buggie thingie, I have seen them before but the dogs never looked quite right in them - he looks bionic in that! We had a young female(which Ben thought was brilliant!) and when he died we got another one - 10mnths not quite good enough to show - and it really is the best thing to help you get over it. You can't ever replace the one you lost but you can get a new life in yours. HTH

edited to add this link - don't slam me for posting sentimental stuff, my wifey found it. NSFW if you blub easily!

18?!! I thought my mother was going to lay claim to that record at 16 with Lucy, who died only recently, Black and Tan Cav and the nicest most gentle creature ever. So sorry to hear about George, Lucy had exactly the same with her legs, and I think was very nearly blind and deaf as well. Fantastic dogs, a bet he had a great life.

RIP mate.

Poor fella. What a cute face. Give it a couple of months and get another dog. I know it sounds terrible like he was just a commodity, but it makes a huge difference. When my dog died, I waited a while and got two more pups. You never forget about the one that's passed but instead of thinking about them and getting upset, you think about them and smile, knowing what a great life they had.

Thank you everyone for all your kind words. George was always the perfect dog as CKCS always are!! He never chomped, bit and was NEVER messy but hated cats.
He was found roaming the streets of Norwich. Taken back to his owner who told the warden to get rid of him. We know he was 6+ when he arrived at the local dog home and we have had him for 12 years. Last year his back legs gave up due to spine damage and he was taken to the vet for the deed but he said that he was fit apart from his legs, so after checking out the internet I found a company up-north that makes custom fit wheelchairs for dogs.
He loved it and although being blind in one eye never bothered him he did crash into a few chairs. George was always a stubbon minded old bu66er who would always woof until he got his way.
I would dearly love to have another, but as we already have two other dogs, A mini smooth Daschund, she is now 14 and does not have long as she is riddled with Cancer. Plus a 3 year old Corgi x Fell Terrier - Nightmare on legs!
But I know the loss and pain will get to me in the end and I will give in I expect. So after 12 years of a fun loving dog this is a very sad day and we are going to miss the stubbon old sod.

It's hard for people who don't have pets to understand how much it hurts to lose a one; they are so dependant on you, and give unconditional love without ever diagreeing or arguing with you. You will learn to live with the grief, in time, so hang in there. Focus on remembering the good times you had with the little fella - he looked a character!

18 years is one hell of an innings.

Edited to add: Having other dogs will help, though it sounds as if you have another sad episode looming. When we lost our Doberman a few years back, after 13 years, it helped that we had already found a friend for her a couple of years earlier. We couldn't bring ourselves to get another dog for a couple of years - it felt like we would be disrespecting her memory - but in the end we did, and now have two little scamps. Still miss her six years on though.

nice stuff about his old boy

I won't show this to Mrs Tonyvid as it will set her off again, she still misses our Ben so much she is to be found having a quiet sob every few days. He too was a stubborn old sod but such a character you couldn't help but love him. His brother died a couple of years ago from the inevitable Cavalier heart problems(he always had a mumour but was fine up to about 8 and then the pills and good excercise kept him going for another 3.5 years)he was her real favorite with Ben more my dog. I often lie on the floor to give my back a rest and he always used to curl up behind my legs and go to sleep - just a big cold space there now

Chin up, go and spoil the other two a bit!
