I have a Nokia 7110 that is getting a bit long in the tooth and have a free upgrade offer with the SP. I am looking for a really simple but neat new phone but have no idea what to look for and cannot stand being patronised by the sales staff. Really like the Nokia 8910i but cannot get hold of this at all. Any suggestions??

6230 is great. Does everything you need but nice and simple.

The Matrix phone? Blimey, that is a bit dated.

Having said that, I can't talk - I still run the now-obsolete Nokia 6130i, although in my defence, I don't believe there is anything else on the market that is as good for a no-nonsense business phone with tri-band, superb reception & battery life, infrared, Bluetooth, Java and voice recognition.

I used to have one of those - real discrete little numbers!

6230 looks neat - thanks Simon. I really need a slide down cover or flip phone to prevent the thing dialling merrily when in my pocket. I cannot be ars@! to keep locking and unlocking the damn thing.

Yeah, 6230 was sooo good. No wonder they became one of the most popular company mobiles - can't find them anywhere nowadays. And yes, well spotted, the Matrix phone. I still love it for the simplicity but the roller thingy doesn't play ball now and again.

I could get a free upgrade to all sorts of things, but i've still got a 6310. Same backplate as the 7110 too. Great phone. the handsfree carkit is the reason i haven't changed it. Nobody makes a decent one. I'd love a Motorola V3 but the carkit is a rancid heap of shit.

If you want a simple phone - I cant recommend the Nokia 6100 enough. I have an all-dancing all-singing Sony K750 now (2MP camera, 1GB Mp3...etc) but I the nokia was so much better in so many different respects. The 6100 is small and compact, has long battery life and is so much better at clearing up distortion then the Sony I have.

Oh its reliable as well. 3 years on after sitting on it, spilling water on it and general other abuse my flatmate is still using it now and the battery life is still excellant!

You can set it to autolock after a short period of time?

Ive got one of these (cos I wanted something simple too) and finding it incredibly easy and friendly to use for calls and text etc. Looks quite neat too I think.

Ermmmm, I think mine is a 6100. And it's very good. My company gave me some Sony horror, and I swapped the sim back into my old 6100 (I think) handset, and it's muchly preferable.

(Mind you, the one I had previously was a 3210, and that was excellent as well, IMHO ... )

I have a Nokia 6310i that I got off eBay for 40 quid. I got a new fascia for it for a tenner and a new keypad for 3 quid. The RF performance is excellent, I can go all week without charging it, I can hear the thing ringing from across the house, and it's dirt-simple to operate.

Recommended.

(don't forget, kids, if you buy new bits for Nokias that aren't X-Press-On or whatever they call it, that you should obtain a Torx T6 screwdriver to do the honours. Many eBay stores will bung one in for free)

It's all very well having a phone that can bake bread, take photos, play music, pour you a pint, etc, but how often do you use them? Very seldom in my case. If I want a photo I use my digital camera, if I want music I'll listen to it on either my PSP or my mp3 player... Phones are useful for calling people, and thats all I use mine for.

Also, if you like older phones, have a look at www.retrofone.com for a selection of oldies but goodies.

So go for a Bluetooth car kit. Then you don't need to worry about car kits when you upgrade.
