My friend and I were discussing this the other night. We both have 'friends' that we don't find particularly stimulating and don't really want to spend our precious free time with. Try as we might, they just don't take the hint. We have both used the tactics of never calling and always being too busy (usually true) to meet up when they call.

I fear that my father's advice was a bit too harsh, a bit like napalm, "What the hell would I want to spend time with you for?" so, I was wondering what the PH massive could offer in the way of advice to me as, after a year of excuses, they are still persisting.

If they are that slow to take the hint, and you really don't want to see them again, why not just be honest?

"Look, I know we've known each other for XX years, but we don't really have a lot in common do we? In fact, as the years have passed we've both changed, moved on. It's difficult for me to say this, but I know we'll both benefit in the long run. The simple fact is, the way I feel at the moment is I'd rather not see you. Who knows we might feel different in a while, but let's just see eh? So feck off"

They really are thick skinned. Last time me and a friend went around to their house we fell asleep on the sofa we were so bored. Having looked through about twenty packs of holiday snaps, they then produced the videos When we woke up they were still talking, seemingly oblivious to our near comatose states

Please don't take this the wrong way but is this person SO bad that you don't want to even acknowledge them ?
Sounds like they're just looking for a mate.

Whenever they ring up they ask if I'm married yet and hint about buying a hat. This ticks me off big time. My dad said I should say, "What makes you think I'd invite you to my wedding?"

No, they just talk non-stop and don't let me get a word in. It is mentally exhausting after about four or five hours and quite frankly we have nothing in common. You see, my problem is that I am too polite and that's how I ended up in this predicament.

Tell them until the Church will marry same sex couples you'll have to wait.

So they don't phone often enough to know if you've been married in the interim? Surely that means they only call once every 6 months or a year, in which case it's hardly a problem just to either A)be nice and look at it as charity work, or B)keep telling them your busy?

Cheers,
Rob.
