A mate who lives a couple of houses away from me has just bought a scooter. Thing is, it seems like its one of those "too good to be true" things. Now it may all be perfectly legit, but to me it seems dodgy.

Its some kind of Suzuki scooter, T reg but has "only" 2000 miles on it (might have been clocked?), and has some damage to it (cracked footplate or something), and the paintwork is a bit scratched. The sellers story was apparently she had owned it for a while but got annoyed because she fell off it twice so was selling it.

I can't however just walk up to him nd say "mate, I reckon that scooters nicked", as hes already a bit jealous of my bike and so he might just think I'm trying to show off or something. So how can I check if its been nicked while not being too obvious? (I don't know the reg plate, and its going to be a bit wierd to ask what the chassis number is).

So should I just leave it or try and check it out?

oh, and its also derestricted, so hes technically riding it illegally

Sounds as though it might be you that's jealous. He might have got a bargin, and it's faster than yours

I'm not jealous at all, I didn't pay for mine and I can have it derestricted anytime I want. I'd just prefer to keep my licence and insurance so I can get a car next year...

Yeh, Tim what the hell are you on about? Read my post first, think about it, THEN speak

Keep up at the back!

Quinny, I do want to help him I just don't know how to - for example, if I ask the BiB if this scooters been nicked and they say yes, I can hardly turn round to them and say "I'll get back to you on that one...", as they will know I know of its whereabouts.

I've read all of it and I have no idea whats going on. You think its stolen because its got some cracks on it and you thinks its clocked because its done 2000 miles. Lots of mopeds have been dropped and lots have low mileage because intercontinental trips are infrequent. You've been watching too much spooks.

I reckon, Christian, the best bet is to not get involved. Either nothing will happen, and he rides off into the sunset, or he could get it confiscated. Which would be unlikely. Id assume the bike to be honest, and see what happens.

My bike only had 2500 miles on the clock when I got it (May ish), that's a T reg too. Maybe the previous owner was telling the truth? I imagine quite a few people buy a scooter, crash it, then don't ride it much. Or they just rode it round town, not picking up miles when it was sunny.

Wouldn't the insurance co. database flag it up if it was nicked though?

sounds to me like you dont like the fact his is derestricted and he's burning you up. At 40mph.

Bird falls off moped twice. Doesnt want to ride it again. Furry muff. Moped had scratches. Well yes, she fell off it. Mileage is low. Its a fricking moped. 2000 miles at 30mph takes a long time. Any other grounds for thinking he's just about to do a Brinks Matt?

Right, for your mate, worst case is something like he's spotted by BiB doing a frankly deadly 40mph, which his restricted moped shouldn't be able to do. So they stop him, and no doubt can get him to prove the restricted-ness of the moped at some testing station or other. But before that they'll check the moped details and possibly find out it's been nicked. So he's then in a whole world of sh1t. Oh, and his insurance will be invalid if it is derestricted. And he'll be riding with the wrong kind of licence anyway. Now if you're suspicions are correct, you'd be a mate to tell him this. If you're wrong, well, you look like a bit of a nosey tit.

The worst case for the rest of us is this thread carries on down the route of txtspk. lol m8. ing stop it.

I remember being stopped by the bib for doing 50mph in a 30 limit on my DT50 many moons ago. Poor copper didn't really know where to start, and proceeded to ask me where the missing L plates were.

I've done 625 miles in 2 months, and I can easily do well over 2000 miles in a year, even at 30mph. And whats a Brinks Matt?

Txtspk was Tim, not me. I'm not arsed that its derestricted, just trying to look out for a mate thats all. Like you wouldn't?

And don't take the piss out of 30/40mph, yeh its slow but I've only kept mine restricted because I'll lose my licence if I'm caught and I'll also f**k my insurance, which will mke next year even more expensive than it already has to be when I get a car.
