Just thought someone here may be able to help.
I have a T-Mobile contract and now I'm living abroad, I'd like to cancel this and transfer my number over to a brand new PAYG Vodafone SIM card. Can this be done AND can I then transfer the number back to a contract if and when I come back to the UK?
Cheers!

Yes you can. They aren't very punctual about it and most of the time they just don't bother (I've attempted to go from O2->BT and various others) several times, and it only happened once. I have actually just resigned to taking the new numbers I get given after losing my temper with some idiot O2 person down the phone.
Whats more you can only do the transfer weekdays as the department that does it is shut at the weekend

Hmmm.....Cheers W333. I really don't want to lose my current mobile number. I've had it for 6 years now and everybody knows it as well as some very important business contacts, but it makes no sense to pay for a contract that I never use in the UK.
Also...does anyone have any idea if you have to continue putting credit on a PAYG and can it ever expire? I only expect to use it every 3-4 months when i'm back in the UK.

OK, how long have you got left on your contact?
You will need to pay off the balance before they release the number...
bear this in mind - you may benefit from a call to T-mobile customer services and downgrade your tariff to the lowest use one. Once this change has ben activated (they give you a date) then call them and ask for a PAC (Port Authority Code) number - this enables you to transfer it to whichever network you choose

Why not put it to a T-mobile PAYG card?
Also bear in mind that you may be disconnected & lose the number if you don't use it regularly.
Chris
I'm already on the lowest tariff with T-Mobile and i've got 5 months left, however I've been told I can cancel for 43 pounds which works out less than keeping it.
I've been with T-Mobile for 6 years now and I'm leaving them simply because I had a massive argument with them with regards to them changing my price plan without my consent. I asked them about the plan and the pratt on the other end of the line decided I'd agreed (I hadn't), and changed the plan to a higher rate without my consent.
So Vodafone is the one i'm going to go to, since T-Mobile has already told me they can't downgrade me to PAYG.
