Hate to disappoint, but it's only about 300 pubs and clubs that have 24hr licences, the rest are supermarkets and shops.

ok is there a list of the 300?

And I'd better revise my original question to Sunday morning in case the pedant-police come out to play again!

I haven't found a list yet, but apparently the local council for the area you're interested will tell you what pubs and clubs in their area have had 24hr licences granted.

So give it a month then Bournemouth property will make a sound investment after the drinking laws have been reverted

The only one I have heard of in Reading which has been iven an extended licence till 6am is Bar Risa in Friar St.I often go there on a student night, but students never go into the town on a friday or ssaturday night, due to it being "blue collar worker night" in the town, where all the local chavs go and piss their paypacket up the wall and see how many scraps they can get themselves in.

best of luck to the police..

Hardly; there are lots of pubs extending by one, two or three hours. If you took the view that most alcohol related crime happened between say 9 and 12 (I'm guessing!) when pubs opened 6-11, then extending 11 to 1am means that window extends from 9 to 2am - a 66% increase.

Of course everyone will just drink more slowly.

So you are saying there will be 66% more criminals?? I think not. the same people who would bother to cause trouble will be the same ones doing it. The ones who don't cause trouble won't do. The time it closes, etc, will make ni difference at all.

'Loft' in Preston is open until 6.30am as of this evening.
Think tonight is by invite only, and i presume in future it'll only be Fridays and Saturday?
I'll report back, if i make it into work tomorrow

Kingston-Upon-Thames wasn't on the list, because the council was "struggling to cope with the application process"

read as: "Couldn't be bothered to type a list for the Evening Standard to cut+paste into their article"

Criminals? Surely you mean law abiding citizens who get carried away with intoxication? The longer people can drink, the more people will go "over the edge" and commit drink related crimes. Some people who currently can handle the level of intoxication they get to by 11pm will behave differently after a couple more hours. I think the police would disagree slightly with your "no difference at all" assertion! Let's just see eh?

Oh, and no, I was saying the size of the window of trouble will increase by 66%. This may mean more problems, or, as you suggest but I feel unlikely, the same amount of problems spread out over a longer period.

Surely you're either the sort of person who wants to punch someone, or you're not? I think that was his point. I've been so pissed I couldn't stand up, and the last thing on my mind was walloping some random guy in the face

Well... Places stayed open last night, and no problems... We'll wait till the weekend has gone, but I can't see there being any more trouble than usual.

70% of casualty admissions are drink-related. Let's see if we can get it up to 90%. That will mean admissions due to all other causes have fallen by two-thirds.

Aren't targets great?

Social and sexual inhibitions aren't the only ones loosened by alcohol though. People do things that are completley out of character when they are drunk. Surely with longer hours more people will get drunk, and some people will get drunker that they would otherwise have done. The link between drunkenness and crime in pretty much proven, so I fail to see how having more drunk people is going to anything but increase the number of crimes. But as I said, lets wait and see.
