we are thinking of going there for a long break (3 to 4 weeks) to chill out in March/April next year. As well as chill out we want some things to see (bit of culture), some hill walking, some day trips to other towns etc., oh and some good places to eat and drink.

would welcome any views on whether Perpignan might fit the bill!

Take a fire extinguisher - and don't sleep in the car!

Went there last year for a quick business trip (obviously not the sort of trip to get a fair impression).... but I could think of plenty of other places in France, especially for walking.

Thought of Perigueux / Aquitaine? Much prettier IMHO.

When I went there several years ago, the impression I got was that it was very very "French"

I know that sounds silly (it being in France an' all) but what I mean is that it didn't really feel like the sort of cosmopolitan Mediterranean coastal area we expected; more of a low-rent Bognor for the French.

Things may have changed and, admittedly, we did it on a student budget.

I wouldn't recommend Perpignan for a long stay, I didnt find much in the town itself this summer although a trip into the mountains was interesting...............just dont run out of petrol on a Sunday as the only pumps that work are the automatic unmanned supermarket pumps and they only take French credit cards!

How about going just over the border into Spain, its far cheaper, its not French, you have Girona and Barcelona for culture and the sights, the hills are in reach for walking, and Andorra is there for all the duty free !!

Cheers,

Tony

We have a place in a small village outside Ceret - further South than Perpignan, about 20km from Spain and 20km from the Med.

Highly recommended - fabulous weather, loads of cheap flight options - Carcasonne, Girona, Barcelona, Perpignan, easy access to the Pyrenees and shouting distance of the sea.

And no French people - they're all Catalans.

If you go to Perpignan, visit Colliure, a bit down the road on the coast.

It's a top place to sit on the harbour side taking in a lager.

We stayed near the Cap d'Agde a few years back, same sort of area. 35 degrees in June, very nice.
Recommend the zoo at Sigean if you're into that sort of thing: lions and bears mooching around the car was entertaining!
