Suzuki invented them...

I had an LT50 when I was younger, fun, but I still prefer ATC's (3 wheelers)

Concidered a mini dirt bike?

Incidentally I thought those 3 wheelers had went out of production for safety reasons?

I'd second that, they're easier to ride than quads.

He can't actually ride a push bike very well, so we thought four wheels might be better as an introduction into PetrolHeadeddom.....

No problem there, we're surrounded by fields and hills and forest etc.

When you do keel over, the quad usually rolls on top of you. It hurts.

49cc is quite a lot for an eight-year-old TBH!

Moped riders (double the age) only get that amount of cc.

Is there not an electric one that'll still go through the long grass round your way - perhaps not.

Mini petrol dirt bike - much better idea ...

IIRC the 250r's were beasts. We used to have a Big Red/250ES which in retrospect was more suited to what my dad actually used it for. Cornering at speed was always interesting!

MikeyT - I would have thought 49cc would be fine, it's easy to adjust the throttle to reduce travel for young uns.

Quads roll ever so easily. Do what I did - Suzuki SJ with 3rd and 4th blocked.

They were, CR250 engine and a very light front, enormous fun.

We had a couple of the precursors to your model the 200E and I had a 70 and then a 110m

That's actually quite a large jobbie and, in all probability, might not easily flush away.....

As mentioned, he's hopeless on a push bike so last thing I want to do is put him on 2 wheels,

We've looked at a few options for electric cars etc, but they suck, motors wear out, batteries wear out or are flat when you want to use it, generally can't be used on anything other than a smooth lawn or on tarmac.

A quad really seems like the thing to go for given the terrain around us. I want a petrol engine in it so he begins to get an appreciation for engines, and hopefully shouldn't be too long before he's taking it to bits and servicing it etc.

If Quads are so difficult for kids then are there any pertrol engined kids cars out there? Maybe like a baby land rover or something?

Not forgetting I still need to be able to pick it up and sling it over the odd fence or two....

Ask Beckham. Didn't he give young wots-is-name a mini Ferrari or something?

Theres a bolt on the thumb throttle which wont allow him to press it all the way down so you can regulate the speed.

Lots of fun but I wouldn't want to be picking it up & slinging it over a fence

Ron Champion of Locost fame did a "build your own buggy" which might be worth considering. you can reduce the chassis size in accordance to the user etc. there must be loads of palns for petrol powered buggies on the net. try the US sites as I would imagine there are a lot of people out there with he space who have built one. Maybe a modified go kart might be better than a quad? i cant imagine it would be that difficult to fit knobbly tyres onto a kart?
