Has Tony Blair gone mad
Discussion
Seriously!
Everyday it seems to be some new crazy scheme, and he's sounding increasingly like some sort of power-crazed slowly dementing overlord. The latest one is suddenly 'Tony Blair is convinced of the need for nuclear power'. Huh? What? Where did that come from? His mind is apparently 'already made up', but he's commissioned a report anyway. Huh? What does he know about nuclear power? More than a report apparently. This guy's a liability. This is sounding scary, when some demented loony who's not a scientist or geographer and knows nothing about nuclear power wakes up and decides he wants it everywhere no matter who says what, and is in the position to make it happen..
I honestly think he's slowly going mad.
What next, tomorrow he'll wake up and it will be, 'Tony Blair has decided all people must speak in Klingon?'. It's like Rimmer in that red dwarf episode where he puts Kryten, Cat and Lister in Quarantine. Tony will have a hand puppet called Mr Flibble soon as well. 'Mr Flibble says people must go without oxygen'..

Actually, Blair's been moving pro-nuclear energy for a while now, although obviously it's something he kept nice and quiet during the election.
And in all honesty, it's the right thing to do. Although the news was presenting it as a form of cutting carbon emissions, the reality is that nuclear is the only viable stop-gap solution between non-renewables and next-generation stuff. New investment in nuclear power will give us another 40 years to commercialise some of the new technologies, increase the efficiency of renewables and kill power station carbon emissions (which apparently account for 30% of UK emissions.)
If we support getting rid of fossil fuel stations, maybe they'll let us have our smelly cars?

IMO it's the first sensible thing he's done
Yep and if he had a spine he would have done it 5 years ago. It takes at least 10 years from proposing a new nuclear power station to it entering service.
I was just saying this today, it's about the best thing he's done or said, at last a reasonable response to an awkward question.
Cheers
Paul
have to say:
AS you can see - its a cold day in Hell - and i agree with Mr. B Liar...
Nuclear way forward.
We can either cover Scotland as one giant windfarm or build a nuclear reactor.
We had the lentlists going on and on about stringing Clarkson up for driving the disco up the scottish mountain... while in the same breath clammering for more windfarms to be built accross the very same moorland - destroying far more... all for nowt!

You might be forgiven for thinking he's played it quite well, public opinion would never have considered it till they allowed the green argument to erect hordes of stationary windmills everywhere as a highly visible failure,
At last they've woken up to the fact that nuclear power is the only thing that's going to plug the power gap, keep energy costs under control and reduce dependence on imports.
It's also the only way we can meet our CO2 emission targets - targets which most ironically the greenies delightedly signed up to
You are simply NOT going to power the country with cutesy windmills, and anything else burns fossil fuel. So you have no choice. France gets about 80% of its energy from nuclear power, and they seem to manage it perfectly well. We are always bleating about how we must do what they do in Europe - 24-hour drinking being the latest example - so let's copy them on this one too.

He can't win. I'm no fan of Bliar, but if he goes with Nuclear power, the greenies, and lentilists get their noses bent out of shape for not going with wave, and solar. If he goes wind and solar, he would need to back it up with either imported power, or coal/gas/oil fuelled power. If he goes with just the latter, then he'll get whinged at too. nuclear is the clear option. Clean, and fullfills all the required criteria. As others have said, he should have said this 7 years ago!
I suspect that popular opinion on this is against nuclear electricity. I am for it, and I think that TB may have realised that there isn't an alternative. That doesn't mean he's going to accept responsibility for it. The hope from him (as with the intelligence on iraq) is that the report will show that he has to act in favour of that which is unpopular (nuclear electric).
Even if it doesn't, he'll make the report look like he had no choice. That's how TB is. I guess it's why they used to call him "Teflon Tony". It's also why I don't like his brand of media oriented politics.
The reality is pressing. We only have 48 hours gas supply for electricity, whilst the french have 48 days. With the cold winter looming, it's quite possible that public opinion will change again. It will be interesting to see TB pass the blame for the thousands of dying pensioners (due to cold) onto some report, which probably wasn't really necassary.
That's the reality of modern socialism.

Business lobby group the CBI today launches a broadside against the Government for procrastinating over whether to build a new wave of nuclear power stations and urges it to make a decision by the end of next year and push harder for energy liberalisation in Europe.
The criticisms of the Government come amid concerns over soaring energy costs and gas supplies this winter as temperatures recently plunged below freezing. Wholesale gas prices have more than doubled this month.
Companies that use a lot of energy in their production, such as chemical plants, have also warned high fuel costs are beginning to hit production.
"A decision on the future of nuclear power has been allowed to drift too long," said CBI director-general Sir Digby Jones.
This was on radio 4 this morning..............so I guess someone has spun it to make it Billy Liar's idea
there was an interview on the politics show with margarte beckett blathering on about this...
upshot of between her skirting the questions was no point building nuc reactors we need more wind et al because he target date is looming and we'll spend all this money on getting reactors online and they wont contribute to meeting the targets... so we'll plunge money into renewables and then we'll considre alternatives when the time comes....

Indeed the crime of the centuary is the windmill waste. Nuclear is the only option and we have known that for 25years or more. How much oil has been wasted making electicity when it could have powered cars for another 2 or 3 centuaries. It looks like Blair will have done 2 good things by the end of his term. Pensions change and nuclear power. Everything else will have to be undone. Bit Like Maggie she was the same. Privatisation and de unionisation. Everything else was crap.

Seriously, we ought to have been down the Nuclear road years ago, but GreenPeace et al stuck their ignorance in the way. The Frogs are well sorted - they blew GreenPeace up. Say's it all.
