My daughter called up last night on the cell and told her mother that two black males, appearing about 15 years old, put a gun on her and took her car right in her apartment parking lot. They demanded her purse but she "nutted" up and told them to f**k off(that's her mother in her). They left, and most importantly, nobody was hurt....yet. The police were pretty quick to go on the hunt; her "Uncles" Santos and Vallaruto are doing their part as well. We'll see what comes of it.

Scary stuff. My daughter is only 1 and I am already having nightmares about how I am going to feel about letting her drive, travel abroad etc etc....

Glad she is ok

That's pretty bad, sorry to hear it. At least they took a telling and walked away without hurting her.

Sorry to hear that Jim, hope the “uncles” find him before the police but either was as long as justice is served.

Is your daughter very shaken by it all? Must be very traumatic for her.

Actually no; she is just real pissed off. She was more worried when her little boyfriend gave chase, afraid he would get hurt. He could not catch a cold much less a carjacker. Even if he did, he don't have the sack to administer any justice. He's a good kid, but a bit too metrosexual for this kind of work. Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate it.

Thanks for your thoughts too Tinman; right, that she was not hurt is what matters....now she learns how life is unfair when the insurance adjuster shows up!

That's scary mate, I have 12 and 9 year old daughters and I know i'd be very angry if anybody had a go at them.
Maybe her boyfriend should carry something in his car, baseball bat,Truncheon or a glovebox firearm, they are legal stateside aren't they?

That's terrible - glad she's okay. In England such an incident would probably make the national news. I'm guessing it won't in the USA? It makes me appreciate the UK a bit more!

They are legal as your car is considered "an extension of your home". However, he is not a good choice to pack a piece. He is untrained and likely to cause more harm than good. When the deed occured, he was inside upstairs(she was returning from the market)and heard her call for him. He was not in the car with her. Since aggrevated(with weapon)crimes are increasingly being committed by underage perps, laws are leaning toward trying certain "children" as adults. In the past, these "children" knew the limits the law had against underage felons and had no fear; that is slowly changing.

Thanks for your concerns. Is carjacking(with knife or gun)or the like that rare over there?

I wish we had your laws mate, the only people allowed to carry guns over here are the criminals.
I'm pleased your daughter is o.k and I hope the police or your friends catch up with the guys that did it.

That's good. Here, as "Lowjack" and other tracking/retrieval devices become more affordable and sophisticated, such crimes are decreasing as jackers know they will be zeroed in on quickly.

Glad she's ok.

The preferred method in the UK is to find out where the owner of the car you want to steal lives, break in and take their keys. I guess this is less attractive in the US where the tea leaf in likely to be met by messrs Smith and Wesson....

That reminds me of something. When I travel, my luggage name tags have my office and toll free number in place of my home. I am paranoid of airport dungeon workers selling information like: "Jim B., who lives at so and so address, just boarded a plane for London" for a fee or percent of the take. Does this concern any of you, or am I taking too dim a view of my fellow man?

I work in an airport dungeon (gee - thanks for the slur!) and of the many scams I've heard of this is not one of them. Thanks for the idea though

Two things - airport workers are getting more honest (we need a criminal record check before an airside pass is issued since 9/11) and easy targets such as laptops and iPods are right in front of you all the time so why bother going to all that trouble? I make it sound like a right thieving free for all but if you avoid Heathrow/Charles de Gaul/Joburg and JFK then you're unlikely to lose valubles. Lets put it this way...I had to search a bag (not my normal duty) and had my supervisor and a security agent as witnesses. It was captured on video and we all had to make statements and sit in front of bosses of various hues for many an hour even though nothing was reported missing.

Oh - and I live in a major city and carjackings are not newsworthy unless someone gets really hurt. I know of a guy who get sent down after one went wrong - but he should have got back into the car and driven off after beating the jacker senseless rather than sticking around jumping up and down on his head about 20 times. I think there is a 5 jump limit.
