Inspired by the debate about a UK football team.

England, N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all countries within the nation called the United Kingtom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. (Unless I am much mistaken.)

Are there many other similar set-ups? I was thinking that perhaps Corsica and Sardinia are contries within (not physically) France and Italy respectively. And perhaps Hawaii is country within the USA.

Hawaii is doubtful, but Monaco and San marino are obvious choices I think, as is the Vatican... Must be plenty similar set-ups though.

Yeah haven't seen Prussia play in a while

The USA is funnily enough just a collection of American states

Hong Kong in China?

Leichtenstein?

The Vatican? (now theres a football team to be scared of with god on their side )

Kaliningrad?

Conversely Korea is technically a single country still at civil war, didn't they actually play as a single country at the last olympics or something?

Hawaii is definitely a US State - not a country in it's own right.

The African kingdom of Lesotho is a tiny place within the borders of South Africa - does that count?

Catalonia has quite a lot of autonomy from the central government in Spain. So does the Basque Country and Anduluica (sp?) but not as much as Catalonia IIRC.

Beat me to it re Lesotho !! - It's a separate country as is Swaziland - also inside S.A.

Interestingly half of Lesotho's GDP comes from dope smuggling into South Africa .

Monaco is a separate country not tied to France at all as far as I can tell. San Marino or Vatican not so sure.

Monaco is a french principality tied to france. It will revert back to french rule if there is a break in the line of accession of the ruling Garibaldi family.

Although they've tried many times to become their own separate country, the separatist Quebec government has always lost the referendum. However, I'm sure the majority of English speaking Canada would love to see the back of them.

The Gambia is a bit odd, in that apart from its small coastline it is totally surrounded by Senegal.

The current bod in charge is looking to change the rules because he has a daughter and no son I think. Anyway he wants his daughter to be able to assend to the throne so it doesn't revert to france.

so, trivia #1, prior to the 'United [Single] Kingdom of GB', only England and Scotland were Kingdoms i.e.[once] ruled by a King. Wales was only a Principality, ergo Prince of Wales. Even Fife [where I am] was a Kingdom. Poor old Wales

trivia #2, Hawaii is the only US state that had its own royal family, with a whole run of them called King Kamehameha I through V. One was particularly important for something as there's statues to him, but I can't remember which one, but not I or V as there were more numerals I recall.

trivia #3, I have a framed speeding ticket from Hawaii on my office , 41 in a 35. Coincidentially on the Kamehameha Highway. Never turned up for the court appearance . Wonder if they'll let me back in?

trivia #4 US Congress apologised for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
