Just acquired some juggling balls (OK, cue Vixpy et al ) and no matter how much I try, it goes to rats when I introduce the third ball . Any tips?

Forget 'How much can you bench press' - I reckon 'How much can you juggle' is a truer indication of manliness.

Hence importance of getting that third ball up

I learned with pool balls and bare feet, concentrates the mind quite well after you've dropped a few.

I'm not sure either of them are a sign of anything except themselves, but I know what seems to impress the ladies most - juggling.

I combine the two - I can bench-press three juggling balls.

There used to be a really good on-line tutorial to teach you how to juggle. I'll see if i can dig it out...

Juggling is all about co-ordination and concentration. I can juggle but loose the skill very quickly without practice. Admitidly it comes back after a short practice session. But just keep practicing it gets easier...

Try using small bean bags at first they are best, but if using balls etc make sure they are of an even weight... Give it time and soon you will be adding a 4th ball....
as well as eggs, oranges, apples and mixtures of all 3...

You only need to watch the top of the arc of the balls, your brain knows where it will land so you don't need to look.

That bit of advice helped me when I was supposed to be revising for my finals.

P.S. Glad I explained that well...

but of course..

I started by standing in front of a wall, so I couldn't chase them all over. If you can do two in your left and right hand (not at the same time!), it's much easier.

Also, don't watch your hands, or the balls, just kinda stare off a little bit in front of you. Try to make sure your hands are going in circles.

When (not if) you get pissed off, DON'T thow a tennis ball through a window at the other end of the house , fixing windows really doesn't help your juggling ability.

Oh, and after you get a little more confident, the plastic handled kitchen knives aren't balanced well enough to juggle, so make sure the wife gets a good wooden handled set, much easier.

Balls - yes
Women - no

I learnt when i was a childrens supervisor at a summer camp. You must have read the instructions, but in case not:

get two of the balls and hold them out slightly ( this is sounding awful ) and imagine there is a square standing in front of you, bottom corners are at you hands, throw the first ball to the opposite corner ( bottom left to top right ) and catch with the other hand ( object is to get the balls to move as opposed to your hands ), then throw one and whilst it is in the air throw the other ball the other way.

Keep doing this until you can do it dead easy. Then hold two balls in one hand ( I know ! )and one in the other, and do the throw to opposite corner thing with just two of the balls ( don't throw the third just get use to it being there), keep doing it until you start to feel youself wanting to throw the third ball ( please note the first few times you do it you will either launch it into the ceiling, or drop it on the floor ).

The trick is to throw it the same as the first two, then, just don't stop, think that you are only ever holding two balls ( ! ), which you only ever are the third is always in the air, as it come down you need to get rid of the bal lin your hand so you can catch it.

To juggle more balls you just have to make sure there are only ever two in you hands ( again ! )

Ineuendo ahoy boys......

Don't be tempted to add more and more balls, that way lies madness.

Move on to clubs / fire clubs asap but be sure to use parafin not petrol

As someone else said, it really helps if you get used to juggling two balls in one hand first.

Once you are doing that introducing the third ball from your spare hand is quite easy. I can juggle with most things now but I have never got past three objects.

When juggling three items, one will be in one of your hands at all times..if three things are in the air you are doing it wrong.

Just do it in front of a wall, you always throw them away from your body to begin with. Learn to do a Jug (one cycle) keep practicing that and then just link together. Simple. In 5 days I bet you can do it.

The tips about standing against a wall etc are all good stuff the other advice is not to think about it too much. I can do 4 balls (for a short time), or 3 clubs or 3 hoops all without being in the circus

Not so sure about its bird pulling potential mind

I learnt pretty much according to tampons' method.
The only thing i would say on top of that, is that the ability to do 2 as described, but starting from either hand (same with holding 3 and just throwing 2, try holding the 3rd in the other hand and starting from there.)
Even if you have a preferred starting hand, you need to be able to start from either.

I never mastered 4/5 balls but concentrated on tricks and juggling odd shaped/sized/weighted things. 3 footballs is about the hardest i've managed.

Any tips on how to move up to 4/5 balls would be appreciated

Top tip from when I learnt - stand in front of a bed so a) the balls don't roll and b) you don't have to reach down so far when you drop them

Moving up to 4 isn't too hard - the basic pattern is actually just two in each hand without crossing over at all. Five is getting really tough - I've heard it called the 'A level' - of juggling and I've never even got close. The same basic pattern as three but instead of just having one ball in the air you have three.

I'd agree with everyone else anyway - learning to juggle clubs, rings, knives etc is much more fun than just going for the numbers. And there's loads of things you can do with three balls (steady...) once you've mastered the standard pattern - underarm, tennis, Mill's Mess (looks awesome when you get it right), under the leg, upside down, bouncy balls...I'll stop there

Oh I can’t stand jugglers. No disrespect to juggling PH’s but jugglers always look so dammed smug.
If you want to juggle something? Go juggle a half a dozen cats. That’ll take the smile of your face.

Lean back a bit so they're not forcing you to chase them.

Ditto...
I did have one practice session with a pal who can also do 3 clubs, so we tried facing each other and coordinating passing a club... I think we got it right once.

Never got the hang of 5 ball cascade, and not good enough to do a 3-ball-in-a-loop style.

Learning is great for fitness - the number of times you do a squat to pick a ball up without noticing...
