Its true, the wiltshire speed camera policy has paid off...

a few years ago, when they started using gatso's, their motorway cars went from Volvos to Lexus...

And after a year of the scamera partnership vans, their rural cars have gone from Honda CR-V's to...

BMW X5's....

and its a similar story in Avon & Somerset, who now have a fleet of Mercs, including the M-class!

But Swindon police need high-performance luxury Japanese sports cars in order to patrol the M4. Their jobs would be unbearable otherwise!

Well if it means there's fewer of them as there's less to spend on salaries, that's a fair swap.

Better one in an X5 than 10 in Escorts.

Don't forget that many Police vehicles are leased not owned.

Better models equals better residuals and therefore more favourable lease payments. In addition, manufacturers also give preferential rates as its good publicity for them.

Thats also why many newer marked Police vehicles are now silver not white - it improves residuals on disposal.

Yep, the Wilts Lexus RX / GS and now BMW X5's are all silver....

So, in 4 years time - look out at auction for silver high mileage "prestige" motors hitting rock bottom money and having the odd hole in the dash.....

Today they might have good residuals. But once the cars go through the auction system, private and trader buyers will give them a bit of a wide berth (as usual). Yes there will always be a market for ex-Police cars, but with a price to reflect.

So, anyone out there looking at a silver Lexus or BMW X5 / 5 series - think again. Come a couple of years they wont be worth as much as you think....

I wonder what they will go for next? Back to Vauxhall / Fords again? Cant seem the BiB in the next version of the Mondeo or Vectra, can you?

Its all true. Even the scam vans in Bristol are Ford Galaxies... the 3.0V6 versions (do they need to get to their camping spots in a hurry?)
