I wouldn't really call a heart transplant common.
I suppost it depends what you need it for. There are 1000's of operations performed everyday.

Oh, but my speciality is caesarian section!

I should imagine the most common is having your tonsils out, and it depends what you consider surgery but i had a pretty rough experience having a tooth taken out the year before last (had to go to hospital for it) where it was burried somewhere it shouldn't be in the palet (sp?).

Cheers,
Rob.

From memory the most common operations tend to be those that can be done as daycases rather than inpatients :-

cataracts
endoscopy
terminations of pregnancy
laporoscopy
vasectomy
cryosurgery
arthroscopy

You need to be careful when counting operations because hospitals specifically count procedures. This then includes a lot of chemotherapy & radiotherapy treatments which obviously aren't operations.

Speak to the information manager of your local PCT to get a full list.
