Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't they have done better to go the other way round????

I hope if they schedule a service like that they won't cram everyone in or they'll might be more DVT cases.
My thoughts exactly, imagine doing that cattle class!!
the longest flight (but not non stop) i have dont is about 26 hours LHR to Quata to Dubai to Joburg with Gulf Air , dont ask why i went that route
Must say i have never flown with an Airline with such excellent service as Gulgair really first class but 26 hours is a killer

I always liked the Grumman Albatross.
Your a sick man E=Mc, they are ugly, should have called it the Hippoptamous
Here's a better kind of Albatros
I have a 30hr flight next month, there is a short stop along the way though, Airbus A340 MLB to LHR stopping in Vienna. I actually went for a more expensive and inconvenient flight just to check out a different sort of aircraft

It was a demonstration flight. Note that it was not carrying many passengers - 35 when it can actually carry over 400.
However, the point has been made. These new technology, efficient engines, can really give an aircraft long legs.
its not all to do with the engines, the long range tanks in the baggage hold will help things considerably.
yup, i know we were working on the design for them in work, and made a few protoypes for boeing.
we also made similar tanks for the long range 747's.
on the 777's of some airlines we've already fitted crew rest areas for long range flights, so one lot of drivers can have a kip, and then swap over halfway.
also the cabin trim is made of lighter materials, and it cant carry as many passengers. up to 3 tanks can be fitted in the baggage holds.
