taken from the bbc website:

"Although more people in England voted Conservative than Labour at the last election, Labour still has a majority of 44 over all other parties in England. "

Actually, I think it's more to do with how the constituencies are divided up. In traditional Labour voting areas, the number of voters required for a win is much lower than in traditionally Conservative areas. This means that some votes effectively carry more weight than others.

Have a look at this map

http://tinyurl.com/9hpbz

It shows how badly the boundaries are divided, for example, more people voted Tory on the Isle of White, than actually bother to vote at all in many of Labours Heartland constituencies???

How can the say that every vote is equal????

Don't moan to me about it. I am Welsh and a conservative and fear being hunted down and burnt alive. In many places round here including my own constituency the Tories are coming 3rd.

Gerrymandering is hardly new, nor is it an exclusively ''new' labour' affectation.

Of course they are, it makes perfect rational sense. Wales and Scotland make over 60% of their GDP from central goverment spending now. They have very little private sector left.

They're hardly going to vote against the party that empolys them are they.

Ahhh ..... so if Parliament in London was for England only, and taxes raised in England were for England only - and Scotland and Wales were separate economic entities fending for themselves with their own parliament and taxes .......

taxes in England would plummet no longer having to subsidise Wales and Scotland , and we would also get rid of the Labour Government ...... bleedin' fantastic

I was up in Scotland back in September. The newspapers there were reporting that governmental lies over the past decades had hidden the true value of North Sea oil and prevented Scotland from declaring true independance. The report in the paper was saying if Scotland had declared independance in the seventies it would be richer than Switzerland now.

Well, the oil isnt theirs for starters, just like it isnt Britians oil either, it belongs to the folks who extract it. but as it comes ashore there they would be able to tax it. It wouldnt have been difficult to land the oil in England though, and the pipeline goes the other way to Scandinavia too and a hell of a lot of it is landed there. The Scots are always saying the oil is theirs. Its no more theirs than it is Englands, or Britains, just because they happen to be a teensy bit closer to it and the pipe came in at Aberdeen, that could have been changed at a stroke.

Racist title thread? Oh come on... Its no different than saying @We want independence' which would not be considered racist.

Whatever... Blair cannot see anything beyond London anyway. The countryside to him is just a means to get to the next city.
This is why his transport bill is a load of crap and his is basing all his transport policy on the fact that we all live in a city and THATS why rural people are suffering.

BTW is it me or does anyone else think Livingstone leaving and returning to the Labour party a bit fishy?

Ohh and that BBC map is quite fancy with its popups. I still think they should just add each of the votes up or is that too obvious?

I could really take offence at that - it really is a pile of racist junk.

The thread title, especially the use of the word 'rid', suggests that, because England has the largest population and land area, it is a 'greater' country than Scotland or Wales and therefore, the English people are better than the Scottish or Welsh.

If you don't believe me, substitute the words 'Scotland' and 'Wales' for 'Blacks' and 'Asians' and see what you think.

If I wanted to take it to extremes, I could liken that statement to something spouted by some Israeli/Palestinian extremists. Dangerous ground.....

Remember, there are a lot of Labour voters in England.

They're outnumbered by Tory voters. Furthermore, according to the Society of Electoral Reform, the weight of a vote cast by someone who is Welsh or Scottish effectively carries more weight than one cast by someone who is English. And let's not forget the so-called "West Lothian problem"

I've no problem with the Welsh or the Scottish, I love both countries very much, but I think it's high time we solved the issue of an English Parliament, and implemented proportional representation.
