I'm thinking of getting a freeview box, to replace the old NTL cable as it turns out all we watch (I watch BBC news, the future MrsJimothy watches E4) is available on Freeview.

According to the Freeview postcode checker, we don't have it in Farnborough.
Has anyone in this area got it, and does it work ok?

Got freeview in Fleet. Reception is non-existent on C5 and a few of the shopping channels, but obviously thats no great loss (and I suspect probably down to the aerial anyway).

My parent house in Dumfries is not meant to receive freeview according to the postcode checker. But they borrowed one and tested it - they get 90% of the channels successfully.

If you can't borrow one it might be worth buying one from a no quibble money back guarantee retailer to test. If it didn't work, return it, no quibbles.

Can't comment on Farnborough, but both my mother and sister have boxes which are not meant to work in their areas and they get it ok, albeit with occasional jittering particularly when weather is bad.

Why don't you try getting a box from someone like Argos with a 16 day no quibble guarantee and if no workee then you can just take it back.

I just checked my new place - apparently I'll need a "wideband aerial" WTF is one of those?

It's not officially available in Farnborough (I presume you mean the Hants one) but I know a few people who do receive reasonable Freeview service in the area.

Freeview could not tell me when we will get it here.

Doesn't bother me, I only watch 3 matches on sky sports, the autumn international rugby matches and I'm more than happy to watch these in a pub!

Just as a follow up, I bought a box on a no quibble return thingy, took it home, plugged it in to the flats aerial and up pops 72 channels! All the ones we watch and no music channels, which is great as the missus channels hops them when bored so we end up getting half a song of the good ones, and more jamster adverts than is good for my health...

Than spent many hours re-wiring behind the TV (had to gaffer tape the scart and optical audio cables in cos they fall out at the slightes provocation, including when my hamster farts)

Now to cancel NTL saving myself a few bob a month.

Without being too specific, what part of Farnborough are you in and what transmitter do you receive your signals from (London/South etc)?

Slightly OT, but I don't get this " you must have a super duper aerial " stuff.
I can get a better signal via digital from my poxy £5, sits on top of the telly, aerial than I can from the same aerial trying to pick up analogue
What's that all about ? Oh, and by the way, I can literally see the local transmitter from my front garden !

I'm just off the Cove one way system, where all the estate agents are.

No idea what transmitter I get the signal from, just plugged it in an it worked guvnor... I'm in a flat in a block 3 flats high so having a high aerial at the top might help.

Not too far from me then (off West Heath Road).

Do you normally watch BBC South/Meridian or BBC London/Carlton when using analogue?

I've never used the analog signal, it's always been NTL (BBC London/Carlton). No idea which one I'm getting with the freeview, I'll check tonight.
