Last weekend I spotted a shop in Bath selling the bumper sticker of t-shirts. You know the sort, read it once, smile faintly and then think of the person who is wearing it “what a sad tool!”

Anyway the point of this ramble is that a couple of the t-shirts were distinctly anti-Christian. “So many Christians, so few Lions!!” etc

So it got me thinking why we Christians are so flippin accommodating of these kind of insults. What would happen if I wore a t-shirt with some derogatory slogan emblazoned across it about Burning Heretics, Muslims and Crusades or Hebrews and Holocausts. Tell you what I would be on the receiving end of a kicking and almost certain would find myself foul of the law, Incitement to Racial Hatred, Breach of the Peace etc. Note: I fully expect some form of criticism for daring to mention the above words in the same sentence.

By the way I am not on some PC soapbox here because I think the whole concept is a load of crap. I do get a bit pissed off however that we are forced to walk around on egg shells for a proportion of the population while the rest of us are open for any sort of insult etc. And when it does happen we can generally do sod all about it, so we don’t bother.

Rant over

Turning the other cheek perhaps?

It's supposed to a central tennet of Christianity after all.

Couldn't give a toss about these slogans.....only just about mildly interested in this thread

With regard to walking on eggshells...don't do that. I'm as Politically Incorrect as they come...but with my cheeky grin and generally good sense of humour I get away with it most of the time!

Sticks and stones.....

As an atheist I couldn't give a flying fck at a rolling doughnut what you choose to display on a T shirt - you'll have to take up your perceived grievance with members of other faiths with them.

Don't really care to be honest. IMO organised religion is a source of too much animosity and violence.

I agree that we seem to tread on eggshells too much. Its like Muslim Women wearing religious dress... not a problem to us at all, but if a british woman went to Pakistan and walked around in everyday British clothes, she'd probably get stoned, and not in the good way

Believe in God, but don't be a sheep, thats what I say!

Actually, the more I read this the more offended I get (and I am, as mentioned above, an atheist, and also someone who thinks that people should be able to take a joke). I'm not trying to be PC, I just don't think that it's a particularly funny T-shirt...unless you think that all Christians should be killed, which, when you get down to it, is what it implies.

Would you laugh at "So many Jews, so few showers!"...?

Quit, then you can behave like the rest of us. After all, if there was a god, he wouldn't let it happen.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Anyway, if your holy book says that atheists will burn in hell why not put it on a T-shirt?

No, I can see where Richard is coming from, and the point he makes is very much a valid one.

It's the fact that if the T-shirts were a send up of Islam, or suchlike then you'd almost certainly find yourself in a spot of bother - whether it be with the law or from anyone else.

Christianity seems to be the only faith where it's acceptable to be utterly insulting to it.

It's also interesting that people feel they can be as nasty as they like to you yet if you respond in any way agressive or assertive back you hear them cry 'OOOOH, how un-Christian.'

You could loosely define me as Christian but I'm definitely an Old Testament kind, very much an eye for an eye. I think a lot of Christians these days have lost the concept of righteous anger and would probably have tutted at Christ overturning the money-lenders tables in the Temple.

Interesting points made. The fact that most "genuine" Christians don't go off one one if their faith is mocked, maybe due to the fact that they generally secure in it.

I know that there are all sorts of opinions regarding the problems which religeon brings to the world, but very few of these are caused by "genuine" Christians. For example, the problems in Northern Ireland (supposedly Catholics & Protestants) etc.. are not facilitated by "real" Christians. A real Christian would not kill, steal, insult, etc.. In this regard I have sympathy with "real" Muslims when they're tarred with the same brush as terrorists - who can't possibly be real Muslims.

I'd also make this comment. Bad news sells. Good news doesn't even get reported. As such, I reckon if you fed all the "real" Christians to the lions it would be a worse place. I've seen many good things which Christians have facilitated (setting up and supporting charitees, etc). Charitees such as Oxfam originated from Churchgoers in Oxford, as did Tearfund, and many others. A friend of mine recently got back from 10 years in Uganda (supported by our church) where his family looked after 300 young orphans and also taught them how to farm. Had he not done so, most of these kids would be dead now.

It's true, some friends of ours have spent a large part of their adult lives working on the mercy ships that go to Africa to supply free medical aid.

But of course, according to many on this forum being Christians they're obviously misguided imbeciles.

I'm fairly sure a recent episode of QI established that Christians were never actually fed to lions, which pretty much destroys the whole premise of this thread...
Apparently it was all church propoganda.

I think whinging impotently on a message board could be the solution.

Good point. Did they dedicate their lives to charity to make the world a better place or to try and please god? If the former then was it really anything to do with religon?

Yes but they made great flaming torches for the Emperor's palace gardens.

A little bit of both I would say. At the end of the day they're nice people. You won't find them mugging old ladies or smashing cars or happy-slapping for a 'laugh' or any similar thing else our increasingly humanistically-raised offspring seem to enjoy.
