Muslim youths, from economically depressed areas, are rioting with police(news says Muslim, but I am sure there are other races and religions participating as well). This began after someone chucked a grenade into a mosque. French President Jack says "Order will be restored!". Not only has it not been restored, rioting continues for the 7th day. There are fears by some leaders that this could spread to other parts of Europe. Does anyone have thoughts on this....what has your news coverage told you?

surprised? no even less so that it kicked off in France, it'll fizzle out after air traffic has been on strike for no apparent reason and the ports have been blockaded with dead sheep

I went to the BBC website and had to type in the search box to find todays news on this. Odd, it is and has been on our networks headlines everyday, although only a minute or so. Is it perhaps selective reporting by BBC as to what makes the front page.

Sorry, I just went to it and had to search; maybe the site's front page changes around throughout the day as many do here.

not seen anything about grenades?? Two kids were electrocuted when they tried to hide in a sub-station ... locals say they were being chase by the police.

There is no reason at all to think this rioting will spread. This is local tension with the police kicking off. Its the usual mix of poverty and hostility to the police ... and the French love of protest too

ah hah ... looks like plod chucked a tear gas canister into a mosque which helped fuel the riot

Word over here is that two boys were electocuted after going inside an electricity substation. They locals think they were hiding from police after being chased, police deny this. There were minor disturbances in "protest", youths throwing stones, torching a few cars.

The police were sent in and during the operation, a teargas canister landed inside a mosque with predictable backlash and local thugs using it as an excuse to cause trouble. Now the rioting is quite severe and spreading to other areas.

Definitely selective reporting!
A pal in the pub mentioned these incidents last night - and I hadn't heard of them! No mainstream reportage, despite these events going on for six days and nights
.
The first I read about this was in today's Evening Standard which stated that two muslim youths were accidently electrocuted whilst hiding in a power substation in an effort to avoid police (ie- suicide). Local immigrants take the (obvious) view that they were murdered by les Gendarmes.

Some time ago someone wrote eloquently about the torture and killing of that 15 year old schoolboy in Glasgow- murdered by a gang who used their dual passports to run and hide in Pakistan. I heard that they are now being returned for trial- but main news media say nothing.

Gotta click "world" though, that require effort damn it

All there for UK news is Blunkett crap, and thats all it has been all day for UK.

Pretty sure they show "world" stuff under UK (default) news usually, but the Blunkett crap has hidden (conveniently) this rioting stuff?

Ah well, will be ok if it spreads here, this country could do with some unrest to give that tosspot BLiar something to worry about!

Apparently it's been going on for about a week now.

Yes, this is what lies ahead for us in the UK.

The result of lax immigration policies and a distinct lack of forethought.

A clash of cultures was always going to be the result.

Muslims want to do things their way, in OUR country.
To them, we are the dirty 'infidels'.
The silent majority are too busy watching soap operas and reality shows.
Other minorities want to make their mark too.

WAKE UP everyone.

I believe that there may have been some "selective" reporting here, only someone from the press would know if any "D" notice pressure has been applied so as not to promote copycat riots here.....then that would have come from the security services and the government not the BBC..

As for the incidents themselves, it's angry young men doing what angry young men do, ......especially when their hands are idle. it's a sign.......no, a result of something else in society.......unemployment and alienation.

Ah well, not to worry. Safe enough where I live. Don't think there is anyone not white english in my whole village except the corner shop owner.

Pretty scary but equally obvious that government might dissuade this being shown on BBC news etc. Just shows how they can influence things though. Heard loads about Blunkett over the last few days, but no one at work or anywhere I frequent have I read about these big riots which is bloody surprising really, as they are pretty big news!

Don't know about selective reporting - the reports have been on the BBC since at least the 30th Oct :-

Yes I agree that it has been reported Hornet, but how? is the question. Did it show the full extent of the riots, or just a quick glimpse?...reporting is sometimes oh so subtle..

I don't mean to get between the blind man and his stick(say the last two words very fast), but why Blunket 's story has overshadowed such an important event in France , what makes it worse is it's been going on for a week now.Do we hate the French so much that we aren't interested in reporting on their domestic troubles? After all we are close neighbours whether we like it or not surement!(shirley in english)

Indeed allnighter, I think that the coverage of it has all been very brief given the situation there. I watched Deutche Welle news this evening which showed a little more.

A work colege of mine who originates from Denmark told me the last few nights there have been rioting youths in Denmark as well but I can't find any link to substantiate this.
