Well, I've held out for as long as I can.....but we now need to get a mobile for my daughter....(11 years old). It will mean that her mother can entertain her desires for some more independence with a little less anxiousness....and after all, "all her friends have already got mobiles ".......

Anyway, my preference is to go for a PAYG deal since that will at least make her a little more aware of what the thing costs.........but maybe we will be paying more than we should??

So, questions are:

Is PAYG way to go...?
Whats best deal/network/phone....?

(If its pink and flip-up then I'm sure she'll be happy...!!)

Any help/knowledge will be gratefully received

My brothers just got a Motorola v3 (That thin flippy thing) on Orange PAYG.

I think he has to pay £10 per month but gets loads of free minutes/txts for that.

About £130 i think (But that may have included a trade in against his old phone)

I've just looked on their website. If you top up £10 per month you get 300 txts free, £20 a month gets you 600 free texts and £30 per month gets you 1000.

Just checked on teh Motorola v3 thats £140. Not unreasonable.

I would definitely go with PAYG. That way she learns the cost of the calls and the fact that no credit = no calls/texts.

My thoughts too......its just the possible "no credits at a vital moment" issue that bothers me......

Don't Orange give you a couple of free calls or texts when your credit runs out? Not sure if other providers do it.

It'll still dial 999 with no credit, though...

And remember, all phones can make emergency calls without any credit (dont even think you need a sim to make 999?)

But orange do give an extra "emergency" call/text after credit has expired

I bought a PAYG sim card from orange for £1 and put it in one of my old mobiles, it does all those essential things they need, such as taking pictures.

On O2 you get 300 texts a month. If you want a sim for free, email me though my profile and I will send you one. Or if you want 2 then I have a few consecutive numbers

We're alll with Fresh PAYG. Son (12) has spent about a fiver in 18 months, just tell the girl to only phone in emergencies. Still, I suppose to a girl, breaking a nail is an emergency.
Coat on, after all it is raining here in Fleet.

On a serious note, if you worry about her when she is out and about then it maybe an idea to use a service like www.kidsok.net/ it's up to you if it makes you feel like you are spying on her though...

if she's 11 she could get a solo card and top it up herself - you could still monitor it but she would know how to add credit if she needed too..

of course she could by booze and knive of the internet with a solo card too...

not as good a phone but better deal overall, its the one ive got but with a different phone. I think the cashback deals are deffers the way to get best value, but just remember to send off the bills, by recorded post. CPW pay up within a week, no bother.

Also, buy throught a cashback site, such as www.quidco.co.uk and youll get £20 odd pounds cashback.

Just dont forget to send them bills off!...

Top tip on quidco.....problem with the phone deal you highlighted is its on "3".....so might as well not have a phone.....
