Its Mars - should be a sight orange tinge.

It's almost at it's closest distance (opposition) - so now's the time so see it

I heard on the radio that Mars is the closest to Earth now than it will be for the next 13 years,so it could be Mars.

I think it may be Mars, it's apparently at it's closest to Earth.

Ta, Mars it is. Never seen it so bright/close, tempted to go and buy a telescope, anyone got one or do you need to spend a wad to get something worthwhile ?

Wallet won't stretch to this..

On Wednesday night the astro society (or whatever they are called) have a public viewing where the members set up their telescopes in Pheonix Park and allow the public to come and have a look. Check to see if there is a club near you doing anything. A) It'll save you the cost of something that may gather dust for years and B) They'll probably have much better equipment/knowledge.

Yep, got one of these babies

A Meade ETX-90, picked it up for $600 in NY when they were £600 here, and the exchange rate was $1.9 = £1

The problem is that the best time to look is in Winter, when it's too damn cold! We took the 'scope on honeymoon to the Maldives though, wow!!

Cloudy

Will it be visible with the naked eye for a while? I would like to point it out to the kids.

It will be around close for a few weeks yet, it won't zoom off

Venus is bright at the moment too. It's very visible low in the west just after the sun sets.

Too low for the telescope for us sadly.

Got the old 8" dobsonian out last week to have a gander at Mars. Not the best planet (or best scope) to be looking at but saw a few dark patches. It'll be nice when Jupiter and Saturn are around at more sociable hours.

Oh and puggit - git!

Bought the wife something similar but a tad less expensive - no groovy motorised bits. Jolly good fun. She was trying to point it at Mars early this morning - but it clouded over.

Have to have another go tonight!
