So which is our favourite newspaper? I used to get the Times daily, but have changed to the Torygraph. I felt the Times was slipping downmarket, not so much with its tabloid size, but with rubbishy articles. AA Gill and Julie Burchill might have a place in a serious paper, but not that large a place as the Times affords them. The new font size in Times 2 is shite. Times, you're fired!

So what is PH-land's favourite paper?

I'm guessing its not going to be The Morning Star.

Torygraph I reckon though I fear there will be many votes for the Grauniad.

The Times was a decent enough paper the last time I read it.

However I prefer the sports writers and columnists in the Telegraph so I go for that.

I have also recently abandoned the Times and have taken up the Torygraph. God, I never thought I`d say that in my lefty youth! Even the Sunday Times, for all its bulk, has gone lightweight and I find little to read of note.

Evening Standard is still good though and does for the train home.

Don't seem to get the Evening Standard in the bleak post industrial grey wasteland that is the Midlands.

Read the FT occasionally, but too serieux. Not seen dead with Sun, Mirror, etc. Used to read the Mail, but find too lightweight.

I've read the Thunderer every day for about 20 years and it has definitely gone down hill since it turned tabloid.

I usually get the sundays times, I also think it's been going a bit downhill of late to the point I'm thinking of not bothering, especially with the price increase.

Otherwise it's Independant, or maybe Telegraph, but mostly I get my news online now.

Last time I read The Times, I found it very poor. Also, looking at the front pages of late, it does seem to be going in for some pretty serious scare-mongering to a point not reflected in the other broadsheets (if one can still use that term*), all IMHO of course.

Torygraph gets my vote everytime. Quality reporting, good columnists and fantastic sports coverage (especially the cricket).

*While we're on the subject of broadsheets, what's all this with The Times et al changing to tabloid-size papers? Quite frankly, if you can't handle a broadsheet (my origami-like techniques have taken years to perfect), then you may as well read a comic...

Telegraph here.

It was the one I stuck with after university (having been spoiled by having them all FOC in the JCR....) principally because it had the cryptic crossword I was best at! Could never get to grips with the Times, Indy or FT crosswords.

I occasionally read The Times but I tend to agree that it has gone downmarket a bit.

I rely on Mrs Fish on PH for my news

Actually get The Scotsman daily - good balance of UK/International/Scottish news, plus classified sections are East-of-Scotland centric.

Tends to be relatively unbiased politically.

I find Mary Ann Sieghart (or Mary Ann Bighead as she is referred to in Private Eye ) even more annoying. The woman is so far up her own arse it's unbelievable.

Independent for me.

I thought it was a great move switching to tabloid.

Ever try reading a broadsheet twice a week on a 757 with the meal tray down without being a pain in the arse to the guy sat next to you ?

Never mastered it so until the tabloids came out I used to shun the papers for FHM et al

Comics you say, Viz please !

Midweek it can be The Times, Telegraph or Independant. Will read the Daily Mail when in McDonalds for a really good laugh, but it is embarrassing when I laugh out loud hysterically after page after page of comedy made up reporting. Will also scan the redtops when in McDonalds too, as they are miles better than the Mail or Express for proper news. Saturday its the Telegraph, Sunday its the Times, but I do find with the Times at the weekend I turn page after page with nothing to read, the bulk of it may just as well have been last weeks paper, or the weeks before, or the week before that.

Glad I'm not the only one who shops around to avoid monotony. As you rightly say, many of the weekenders are seriously guilty of bulk over quality!

This post confused me because it is identical to what I would have written myself.

Anyway, another vote for the mighty G-Dogg, but I prefer to read on-line (not that I have much choice). Seems easier to skip to the sections/editorial that way rather than working through a hard-copy.

I like the times as they do give a lot of coverage to Rugby. Rugbyism is my religion, and it's important!

I do like Clarksons rants on a Sunday too. (..and the sports suppliment)
