BBC news story

Labour is proposing to ban drinking alcohol on trains and buses. Tories and Lib Dems have condemned the plans as "another example of the Labour nanny state".

My experience of drunken behaviour on late night trains/buses is that most people are utterly pissed up prior to boarding, so any alcohol they consume on said bus/train is largely irrelevant.

I like to enjoy a can on my way to London from Wigan. It takes a while and isn't much fun. The trouble, as has been mentioned, is the people that board already totally pissed.

I'm one of those that never feel the need of a drink on a coach/train/plane anyway, but...

I'm not so sure that "drink" really is the problem here.

It's coming around to Christmas time and the works outings are being organised. I choose not to go these days because the actions of some of my "colleages" offend other people and are likely to end up in trouble.

You may say that this proves that it's the drink! But no, they are the same when they are sober! totally oblivious to the fact that they are annoying people.

A very "British" trait these days I'm afraid....fech you! "I'm" enjoying myself...."I" can do anything I like! You can't tell me what to do!.....and that's just the kids....

It's a shame really.

I worked up in London for about two years, and during the summer on the way home, it was just soooo hot.

I used to go in in the morning, just looking forward to an ice cold can of Stella, on the way home.

As said above, people generally don't get p*ssed on public transport but rather get p*ssed first then get on a train/bus/tube.

They are trying to tackle the problem too far down the line. Better policed public transport would be a step in the right direction. Also being alot harder on trouble makers instead of a little smack on the wrist would be another.

Seems to be the general theme of this government really. Take smoking, just ban it instead of trying harder to get people to quit, doesn't solve the problem, just moves it. Take scameras, wait until a motorist has actually committed the offence of speeding rather than better educating drivers and finding more effective means of stopping speeding in the first place.

Why our MPs feel the need to ban something for everyone because the scum of our country abuse it is beyond me. Punish them, not us who like a beer or two on a 4 hour train journey to make it a little less tiresome.

It makes me so so angry, to the point of not really wanting to live in this country that I love(d) anymore.

This government sucks, and I hope the people that voted them back in will regret every second of it.

Just don't serve them in the bloody quiet coach. Whenever I sit in there about 20 pissed geordies come and sit next to me and shout. All the way to London.

Drunkeness on trains is very annoying but I think, as everyone says, they are drunk before they board.

what we need to ban is inconsiderate people.

How are they going to police it?

A CCTV camera is going to have a hard time taking a can of beer out of someone's hand.

Where does the ban start if you're on the Eurostar?

Half way through the tunnel, I suppose...

They better extend the ban to 'planes too - otherwise someone will complain under Human Rights or something.

...and boats while they're in British Waters.

Perhaps you should ban it from public places too. Like outside of pubs. Then you could ban it inside pubs to be on the safe side.

Then..................

The idea of drunken bus and train drivers sure scares me or have I missed the point.

Seriously through will the dinners on the Orient Express now not be able to enjoy a glass of win with dinner.

How many people arrive sober on a bus or train and then get pissed up and cause trouble?

This is another attack on personal liberty. The Government is quite happy to encourage people to abuse alcohol by extending opening huors, but unwilling to deal with the consequences. Stupid, duplicitous, half-wits.

Since the Orient Express runs from Paris to Vienna I don’t think this ban should be a problem for them. Unless Tony’s remit has increased to the continent, god help us.

Not been able to smoke on them for years. I would prefer NOT to have some drunken lout hanging around with his 'mates' taking the pi$$ out of thier fellow passengers and using the excuse of being drunk.

What is more offensive 60yr old business man on his way home smoking or a 16yr old tw@t abusing passangers?

and NO I do not smoke!!

As a frequent traveller on the Paddington - Bristol mainline I have seen all sorts. A few times I have seen blokes get on in London and then buy a load of beer from the bar and get pissed. But I have to say that this is rare - not frequent at all and in reality it has been only a couple of times. So hardly a major issue really.

My concern with this is that there is little enforcement. Ok ban booze on public transport. But how are you going to enforce it? Little said about that. Personally I dont like to booze on any transport - normally I need to drive at the other end, so doesnt make sense. But the bigger concern are those who get on pissed and then carry on drinking to then drive at the other end - but in reality how many people do this?

Seems misplaced priorities here - surely there is something more important to deal with? This is hardly a major issue for the huge numbers of people who use public transport on a daily basis....

But the whole stupidity of this government proposal is that it is still totally possible to board a bus/train while offensively half-cut, and those 'people' offensive enough to cause the type of grief we want to avoid won't care anyway and will ignore this law.

So what exactly will this ban achieve, except causing the law abiding majority to be punished like school children?

Trouble is, as has been said, the drunken lout will probably be that way when he gets on the train so this will not resolve the problem.

All this will stop is commuters who have long train journeys unwinding after a days work with a couple of beers on the way home.

When I commuted from Brighton to London the buffet car on a Friday evening was like a pub. Mostly professional people being civilised and winding down after the week.

All the ban will do is stop this without doing anything to stop the real louts on the train.
