Just had a long weekend staying with some freinds at their home. When we got there, they told us they had fleas :yikes: We seem to have gotten through the weekend without getting bitten, but I was paranoid about importing any fleas when we got home. I stopped off at the shop and bought several cans of flea spray and I have sprayed every single item as it came out of the car, sprayed every single thing as we unpacked, and all our clothing has gone in the wash, then we all had red raw scrub baths/showers. So what are the chances of the odd flea hopping onto a suitcase or a coat and then hopping off and into our home? Am I being paranoid?

I'll say - if you spent the weekend there, you've got FLEAS!

Best thing is what you have done. Spray everything, but be carefull as some sprays will take the colour out of clothes.

They home in on carbon-dioxide, so dont breathe!

Maybe as you didnt get biten they had killed them all.

Freinds of the wife really, and they're quite snobby, so it reminded me of that episode of The Good Life when Margo Leadbetter got fleas and it turned out to be Mrs Doomspatterons dog, not the Goods or the council estate down the road.

You'll only have a Flea problem if they find blood to suck on.

They usually jump onto your feet and ankles. So keep an eye out. No blood = no Fleas.

my old tenants very kindly left the house with fleas.

my one bit of advice would be:

if you do find any then get a "proper" spray! i used 2 cans of standard pet shop spray to no avail so i got some more powerful stuff from france which got rid of the problem easily.
you can tell how strong it is by how long it says you may need to re-spray in. most pet-shop sprays say you may need to re-srap in a few weeks. the french stuff i got said you may need to re-spray in 7 months!

It depends on what sort of fleas.

Some years back I had some cat fleas get totally out of hand.

I used a stiff broom to rejuvinate the carpet prior to using a carpet fresher, this took flea eggs and then spread them onto the carpets I rejuvinated. As the eggs hatched the fleas were jumping everywhere and all the proprietary killers did nothing.

The money I spent with Rentokil was a very sound investment. A blanket spray does not kill eggs, but kills the flea when they hatch.

Cat fleas do not bite humans, neither do dog fleas; but one thing is for sure, once they get spread about you're in trouble.

I'd just observe what is going on - you may be OK, but call the pros in if you get even one.

Sulphur dioxide.

Get some safe insulating non-meltable containers and burn a few teaspoons of sulphur in every room, with all the windows shut. Then go out for the day and leave it. When you get back it'll be a case of holding your breath while you get the windows open and then waiting outside while it clears.

Because it's a gas, it can be got rid of after it's done its job and you don't get nasty toxic shit hanging around for ages like you do with sprays.

Cat fleas do not bite humans

Look at the scars on my legs and say that...

They do bite humans, but they can't survive on human blood; and not all humans react to the bite. When my mum's cat was heavily be-flea'd my mum and me got bitten to pieces but my dad and my sister didn't get touched... apparently.
