Football legend Best critically ill

Football legend George Best's condition in hospital "deteriorated dramatically", his former wife Alex said.

The former Manchester United star has spent three weeks in the private Cromwell Hospital in west London after being struck down with an infection.

Best, 59, who also played for Northern Ireland, had a life-saving liver transplant in 2002 following well-documented drinking problems.

Earlier this week his agent Phil Hughes said he was "doing very well" and his condition had improved.

But it appeared that his health had taken a turn for the worse.

It was understood that he was was suffering from internal bleeding and was on life support.

Professor Roger Williams, who is in charge of the former footballer's care, told The Sun: "It may be an exaggeration to say that Mr Best is gravely ill. But he is certainly severely ill and is fighting for his life."

The professor told the newspaper he had not traced the cause of the bleeding.

He added: "We are not giving up. There's still a chance we can get him through this."

Ah, yet another excuse for the PH high and mighty to judge and sentance. I've said it before, alcoholism isn't a choice and if you think he's lying in bed with pipes in every orifice thinking, 'funk em, I've had a whale of a time' they need therepy themselves. Like drug dependancy, and every other addiction or obsession, alcoholism is a living hell.

To be fair, alcohol is the most widespread and successful social drug there is, herion isn't. How is anyone to know they will become addicted to something before the event?
Now in a black and white world you could say that these people have just as much strength and fortitude to fight an addiction as the next guy but that just isn't the way it works. I grew up with an alcoholic father, my best man was an alcoholic as were many of my school friends, some survived some didn't, thankfully my father rode it out but he was one of the most stubborn bastards I've ever met.
It's so easy to judge from the comfort of a normal existence and I wish, really wish, that the combined intelligence of all who post here would just sit and think a little before they pound their keyboards in rightous indignation about something they (if they were to admit it) know not very much at all.

sorry bout that

I agree with what you say in most respects Apache but a lot of alcoholics don't have the support that GB had in trying to break the habit.

There is no doubt that Best was one of the greats, but the remains of his life he pissed away. What is incredible is he took a kidney then carried on drinking. That kidney could have saved a life that was serious about living.

The man is no role model, he is nothing to look up to and apart from the odd goal along time ago, he is a total waste of oxygen like his son. At least his son is doing the best with what he has, his father just pissed it all away.

yeah sorry, I've tethered the large horse outside now. That's just it though, some people become addicted some don't and, sure, you have a choice, initially, but what 17 year old thinks, mmmn, better not go there because I might end up an alcoholic. By the time a couple of drunken nights with the lads have elapsed the damage is done, I know, I used to drink like Billy the fish, everyone did and it's only as life progresses you find some still living in the boozer getting hammered or becoming married and hiding the booze in the cistern.
I have recently come to terms with the fact I was drinking to feed a habit and have drastically changed my lifestyle, I can and have done it, others through no fault of their own cannot and it's not because they are weak, christ, I'm no superman.

It wasn't a dig at your topic Fishy, more an observation that its going the same way as the last one about George B.

The man is a legend.

He bought more pleasure to more people in a few short years than most people will bring in two life times.

Leave him alone.

I'd agreee with that, I met him once and he was a really nice bloke (he was sober at the time...).
I don't think there's any point in discussing George himself, but if it makes people maybe look at someone they know who may be going down the same road....
