You put Basil in the ratatouille?
We have suddenly found ourselves under siege by mice - they've come in under the eaves and are scuttling around in the roof at night. Which makes the dogs go berserk. Hence why I am posting this at 3.00am.
Anybody got any foolproof ways of getting rid of the little buggers? I don't mind if the solution isn't particularly, erm, humanitarian, so long as it's permanent.

There are some types of poison that are designed to make the rats/mice dehydrated so that they will leave the house seeking water and die elsewhere. You might have someone come look and see if they are getting through to the attic via some leak or opening in an attic vent. Traps work OK, but then you have to deal with dead animals directly, and once a rat has been killed by a trap, even if it's removed and trap re-baited, new rats can smell the blood from the previous rat. So I recommend poison that will get them out of the house, and looking for how an opening might have been created.
I know it seems cruel or un-PC, but considering that rats used to carry the plague, I have no problem with killing them. They are a disease-carrying nuisance, not pets, you know?

I'm not worried about being politically correct in applying the solution. I don't think a cat will help because they aren't getting in to the main part of the house - they are going into the roof via the eaves. My Staffy and Jack Russell would also apply the final solution to a cat long before it had the chance to get to the mice. I think I'll need to get some traps but just wondered if anybody had any experience of which are most effective. I'm not bothered whether the trap kills them or catches them alive, so long as it's effective.
Does anybody have any experience of the plug-in sonic transmittors that are supposed to be so effective? Will they drive my dogs berserk?!!

Thanks for the advice - I'm not keen on a poison-based solution in case the dogs end up getting hold of it, or of a poisoned mouse. I'm going off now to get a couple of traps and one of those ultrasonic things. Hopefully, between them, they'll get rid of the existing mice and put off any that might be looking for a cosy spot for the winter in the future.
How the hell do they get in the loft under the eaves, are they on the roof?
I wouldn't lay any poison if I were you, they scurry off die and stink your house out.
Best to use a deterrent such as this:-

Or this:-

Combined with this:-

I have used all of these to meet government requirements in the test facility archive I used to run.

I used the humane mousetrap to get rid of one years ago, but the only way to get them to work properly is to smear stilton at the far end as the first time I tried it the mouse nicked the cheese and left the trap
I had a mouse in my attic last year and the little beggar ate the insulation on the electrical wires....now every time the outside light comes on the lighting circuit fuse blows
