60GB iPod. Some people will jump on the anti iPod cause but IMHO it's excellent. iTunes is the best music player/organiser bar none. The iPod is the best selling play, outselling all others put together, for a reason. I've had a 20GB and now got a 60GB photo (the 20 was too small).

Can't recommend them enough. For every person who says "I had one, it was crap etc.." there's 1000 who love it.

The support and accessories for iPods just blow away the competition. I can even control mine from my car stereo.

Whichever way you go, though, iTunes can be used regardless. It is a very good programme - much better than Media Player IMO - and makes burning and naming your CD collection a doddle.

The only bit of functionality you'd miss out on with a non-Apple player is automatic synchronisation.

I won't be buying anything from Apple ever again after the trouble I've had with all three of my iPods. They break way too easily and don't even mention the battery issue which makes them scrap within a year.

I wish I could say different because it is a great piece of kit but it's let down by substandard quality.

See, I've heard so much about the battery issue, but I've had my iPod for coming on four years now, and it's still going strong. Musta just got lucky.

I don't know, it does seem quite random. Mine which is about 10 months old will only playback for 1-2 hours despite how long you charge it previously. If I charge it overnight tonight and want to use it in the gym tomorrow at 5pm then there's a high likelyhood it won't start at all.

Has to be the iPod for me. I'm on my second model - the 60gig Photo, which I've had for a year now - but will shortly be upgrading to a black 60gig Video model.

I've had no problems with the battery on either of mine so far, except to say this: I have an Alpine iPod-controller head unit in my Audi, and the battery on the iPod will go flat if I leave it attached AND don't use the car for more than a week. Seems a bit obvious to me though, and common sense now tells me to remove the iPod overnight anyway, for the sake of security as well as saving battery-life.

A lot of people give the iPod stick when often it's not deserved. Whilst I know that certain problems with the Apple models have been widely documented and are now infamous, I suspect many of the people who jump on the 'Applebashing' bandwagon have never actual owned or extensively used an iPod. I've certainly found my latest model to be the best file-based music player that I've ever owned, used or seen, technically as well as aesthetically.

All IMHO of course.

Thinking about getting one of thoses for my girlfriend for Christmas.
-it comes in pink

Also it uses OLED which means the screen is part of the case

I've got a Sony HD1 which I love
Although the software could be better and the navigation isn't as nice as my friends mini iPod. It sounds good and if you use Sony's own format (ATRAC3) instead of MP3 you get you the same quality for almost half the file size

I've got a 3rd generation iPod - never had any problems with it. Use it mainly in the car. Get some decent headphones for other use though, I use Sennheiser MX550s

I bought my girlfriend a Sony HD1 last year and it's very impressive.

Sound quality at 64kbps using atrac3plus is perfect for portable use and battery life is very good - far superior to apple's claims of battery life.

Only possible downside is that the sony portables are not directly compatible with mp3. When you transfer mp3's to the player you have to use the sony software i.e. you can't drag and drop from explorer. It's not actually any slower uploading mp3's via the sony software it just means you can't copy mp3s straight to the portable hdd. When on the hdd they appear to be stored under a different format

This 'problem' annoys some people but has never affected me. I don't download very much music - just convert my cd's straight to atrac3plus

I'd rather have the sony for its improved battery life and sound quality of the atrac compression software.

I have a Sony HD3 (EDIT not an HD1) - the Sonicstage software that comes with it is kind of ugly and yes, you can't drag and drop with explorer.

HOWEVER get hold of something called Vaio Music Transfer and it's so much better, a very small application that lets you drag and drop files straight onto the player from Windows, none of this crappy 'importing' into sonicstage and all that rubbish. You still need sonicstage to delete/organize files on the player though, but it's perfectly good at that.

P.S. HD1 owners did you know there's a recall out (search the net).

What recall? Didn't look very hard but can't find a recall on the HD1.

I had the mp3 upgrade done a few months back.

Plus i assume you know about the hack to remove the 'european' volume limiter - that was the best upgrade i have done by far

Pentoman - I've got an HD3, is this Vaio software a freebie or something that needs to be bought?
