Anybody see this article?

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1785932,00.html

Part of it reads: "The SAS officers claim they often found police firearms units to be small “cliques” with professional standards below those found in the military. “In the bar after exercises, the police would still be carrying their pistols and have MP5s (machine guns) slung over their shoulder so they could pose for photos. The first question they always asked was whether we had killed anyone.”

Do you think these are unfair comments? I'm sure reading something like this will not exactly inspire an already gittery public after the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes. Should we be worried?

Would it be that Police Officers are failed SAS applicants, in the same way that Traffic Wardens are failed Police applicants and Security Guards are failed Taffic Warden applicants??

When you have armed police mistakes will regretfully happen.

However given the proliferation of illegal firearms we should be looking to increase the numbers of police who are armed, in order that they can better maintain law & order.

I was more concerned that they fired 11 shots at close range, and 3 missed!

It's that old psychological chestnut "does the trigger pull the finger?"

But for at least 10 years i have witnessed armed officers. Plus stood behind armed pc's in the queue at filling stations which i'd rather not say where but not London.

The police have been discreetly arming themselves for at least the past 10 years

It seems to me that The UK is getting more like The USA every day! The argument is, "well if the criminals have guns then the police should". Problem is, the criminals simply get bigger and better ones and the whole thing escalates - like the USA!

As such, I'm dead against the police having guns, except in exceptional circumstances.

srebbe, as long as we stop idiots having guns as a hobby, do not let them be imported then shirley the rozzers can be tooled up.

Any ped carrying a firearm can be gunned down.

And every like farmers with shotguns can use alternative methods, and clay pigeon shooters can just get a new hobby.

but what about our right to bear arms then, this is really the only way to protect ourselves against a Despotic Government and is the sole reason it was allowed in the first place all those years ago (only in those days it was the Crown who were the would be Despots, nowadays its the Government), guns were banned after Dunblaine, but this was yet another Government set up as it was well known that thomas Hamilton was a Paedophile who was the ringleader of a Paedophile "ring", many of whom were Police officers, having been refused a Gun Licence by the Police his Friendly MP (an associate in his Paedophile ring?) overrules the decision and gets his refusal overturned, suspicious or what?, you decide.
Sorry to gass, but its just my honest opinnion that all these disasters are made up to justify something, its so much more than mere coincidence to me thats all

One problem with the police is the lack of training they get. I remember reading that it is quite possible for an SAS soldier to fire more rounds in a day than an armed police officer will in a year. Apparently the percentage of shots off target for our police is very high.

FWIW I pretty much agree with Scoobz... guns should be restricted to the armed forces and specialist police units (with appropriate training). People like Mark can keep their guns in a safe on the range (and avoid being burgled by people after their guns ) and the range is also the only place to get ammunition.

Trouble is while this would probably be quite effective at stopping guns being fired at non-human living targets it wouldn't have much effect at keeping them out of the hands of criminals, who I guess prefer to get them smuggled in rather than burgling Mark

And by the way Friends Reunited are looking at the legal implications! Apparently, there was a test case which won!
